I had a friend ask me how many rounds his new Colt 6920 would take till his break in period was over. I told him 100 or so, it seems to be the point when my groups tighten up. That’s from what I remember, has this been the experience everyone has had? I did do a search but round count seems impossible to find. Mostly it’s that you don’t have to be super anal with cleaning in between shots or that you do. As always, thanks for the help guys!
I personally don’t bother breaking in a barrel anymore. doubly so for a chrome lined one.
If you want the arguments for both perspectives, search past threads on this top or do a google search.
When I did that a few years I really couldn’t fine conclusive proof that it did any good. The reasons sound good, but I personally could not find data to back up the claims. the claims came down to may help, and it makes me “feel” like I did something.
On the “don’t bother” side, I found the reasons for not going through a break in process more compiling.
To help you out a little…here is some shameless thievery from an Iraqguns post in another thread on this very topic.

Approx. 5-7K+ rounds [+/- depends on ROF]
- USE Quality .223/5.56
- Do not stop to patch
- Do not scrub after ever round
- Do not fire dry
- Do not take internet advise/follow da hype [Maybe this]
- Do watch for broken crap/pins/stuff that wears [Replace & continue break in]
*** RUN IT LIKE A RANGE RENTAL

Colt 6920 ain’t made for shooting groups ![]()
I called LMT about this a while back (I think I spoke with Gene), he said that chrome lining doesn’t need a break in, the chrome is so hard you can’t really do it.
No barrel break in is necessary. The trigger will be broken in after 1,000 rounds.
I agree, but the quality of stnd CL barrels these days pretty darn accurate with good ammo.
My Colt6940 was well under MOA
I have had 2 DD CL barrels that shot right at MOA
The Noveske …u already know!
No need to break in, but they might tighten a bit after a box or two.
