chopped KAC VFG ?

hi,
I recall somebody here or on TOS that chopped a KAC VFG making a “stubby” version…
since I have a spare KAC VFG (and too much free time  ) I was thinking about doing the same.

does anybody remember how to do this?

TIA
Frens

Well I never posted anything about it but I did cut down the one that was on my Bushy (too much time at the station with nothing to do). I would post a pic but it went with the rifle when I sold it.

I took a hacksaw (the dremel was taking forever) and cut just below the third ring then took the “plug” (for lack of the appropriate term) and cut it down. There was not enough threads to lock up to the grip so I used Super Glue. After that I just counter sunk the head and nut of a small bolt (10-24 ?) in the top holes. It came out OK and looked fine, but when I purchased my new rifle I just put a TD Stubby on it.

Anyone have any pics? I have a extra KAC grip to have been thinking about doing it also. Might do my TD tonight…

I have a few of these laying around as well. When my days off come I will give it a try and try to post some pics of the process.

I am curious, did you do anything to add or keep the peg on the plug? I realize that it is prob not nesescary because when you tighten it it is fine but curious. I will also show my other mod that I made for a pressure switch.

Dave

ok I’ve done it
this is just a crappy cellphone pic but I’ll post better and more pics later.

I was also able to keep the “peg” on top of the plug

here we go with a couple of clear pics

HTH

what is the overall length of the vfg once the cut is made? could you post the steps made to cut the vfg?

thanks…

Great project!

I am, however, slightly surprised that KAC hasn’t tooled up for a reduced-length version of their own VFG. Despite the obvious market saturation, many shooters still prefer the KAC grip to all others, but the full-length post is a bit much for the forward holds that are now the de facto standard of tactical shooters.

There are many alternatives – excellent ones – but the trim lines and contours of the KAC are still best-in-class in many ways. I don’t know about anyone else, but if a factory “chopmod” were offered, I would probably buy four on the spot.

AC

the overall length is about 1" shorter or so in the pic Frens compared the chopped to an normal size KAC VFG

about the same on mine.

I don’t have a KAC but have a cheap John Mason company VFG that I sawed about an inch or so off the bottom. The Mason unit uses a cross screw for attaching to the handguard so the the grip itself is hollow. You don’t need to fool with the screw unit. It’s also only $8 plus shipping.

I eye balled it where the top horizontal grasping groove was and let the Skil jigsaw go to work.

Experimented with my most beat up KAC VFG last night at work…came up with this.

how do you re-attach the threaded part to the upper section? it looks like some sort of o-rings around there.

thanks.

Super glue, for now I put o-rings to fill the gap between the larger diameter of the grip and the rail section. Will eventually fill and smooth with bondo or expoxy.
If the glue holds, may just leave it as is.

KAC should really consider a chopped VFG. Ive switched to TD stubbies but the KAC VFG is still better ergonomically for me.

This looks like the KAC vfg but has a quick detach mount also, not a fan of the price

KAC might have chopped one of their own VFG`s. The KAC website show a short VFG on the 6x35 PDW.

at the moment they dont sell them. the ones that you see at KAC were custom shopped from the standard grip

What is the finished length?
-I don’t have a KAC but have a old GG&G that I might try this with.

About 2 1/2 fingers
Can’t find a tape right now.
