They were also doing foot binding up into the 20th century.
I will not deny the importance of ‘The Art of War’, however the information within was fully employed for a comparatively short period of time and all but fell off completely once the gov’t worked out that they had WAY too large a population to sustain, started killing off female newborns, and ‘discovered’ that when you roll 30k poorly trained and equipped troops over an opposing force of, say, 5k that has greatly superior technology they tended to be successful regardless of the disparity.
Hell, good portions of the rest of civilized society were doing it too at the least into WWII.
WWI woke a few nations up once they had a few thousand troops burned down during a days activity using massed bayonet charges against machine guns, but that didn’t outright stop the tactic.
The Japanese most definitely employed it during WWII in the Phillipeans, and without doubt China and Korea did it on more than one occassion during the Korean war.
So, yes, the country that developed ‘The Art of War’ most certainly isn’t beyond the tactic.
But now they have literally 10’s of millions they could put on the fields via conscription, even if for absolutely no other reasons than cost effectiveness and exponentially increasing available resources per capita for the remainder of the populace.
Don’t try to fool yourself into believing that all nations are as concerned about casualties as we are.
When China invaded Vietnam in 1979, China got its butt kicked. The casualties on the Chinese side were very high and they could not hold ground.
But since then the People’s Liberation Army won a battle. It was on June 4-5, 1989.

My wife is reading Japanese newspapers on a daily basis, online. Lots of stuff on this being reported that we don’t see.
For example, a Chinese guy who owned and drove a Japanese brand car was stopped by a mob in China. He was forced out of the car. He apologized for driving and owning a Japanese brand car and promised not to do it again. Mob attacks the guy. He is in the hospital, severely hurt and paralyzed on one side. I am sure his car was trashed too. This is one of their own who happened to own a Japanese car.
Several Japanese owned factories have been attacked and damaged. Hello? Whose jobs are going down the drain because of this? Not Japanese jobs. Chinese jobs.
I foresee a lot of Japanese factories moving to Malaysia, Vietnam, and other more grateful places. Maybe even to S. America where the transportation costs to N. America would be less and where there are lots of people looking for work.
As China’s unemployment goes up because of the mass movement of factories away from China, they will maybe start to realize what fools they have been.
These islands have been recognized as Japanese possession since the late 1800s and if you look at the map, are closer to “Japan” (Ryukyu Islands which includes Okinawa) than they are to China. When the USA turned Okinawa back over to Japan in the early 70s, these islands were included in that.

I’ve been following the Chinese reaction which reflects a long-held anti-Japanese sentiment by the WHOLE of Asia due to Japanese aggression/militarism not too long ago.
I suspect there is FAR more than what we are all being told/can find on the Internet…
I just wish (and pray) that it will all stop.

I believe you’re quite right, During WWII, the Japanese Army did horrible things to the Chinese…They killed Chinese civilians by the thousand, just for shits and giggles… The Chinese did’nt forget,or forgive…The Japanese made their bed about 70 or so yrs ago…let them sleep in it…I just hope the U.S. dosen’t get drug into it…The very last thing we need, is war, over 3 dots of dirt in the ocean…
The Chinese and the rest of Asia are just afraid to give up the permanent victim status. Kind of like some groups here in the US.
Except for a few old veterans in the old folks homes in Japan the Japanese are long gone who were involved in the pre-WW2 and WW2 Japanese atrocities and mistreatment of their fellow Asians.
Same for the Chinese, Koreans, and others. The majority of the populace is post war born. (Yes, I know that there are still significant minorities who were kids or young adults).
Japan has apologized many times since the war ended.
The Chinese and Koreans and others there will never be happy with anything. They want the permanent victim status and all that affords them to complain and take advantage of their fellow man.
I don’t see Chinese standing around lamenting the mistreatment they received at the hands of Mao and his compatriots.
