CheyTac .408 Defender

Anyone got any opinons about this weapon system? Good or bad, just looking to pick one up and want some feedback first

I wouldn’t do business with such a litigious company. The 408 is very expensive, hard to find rounds for, and hard to actually use to its potential.

Recommend an EDM Arms Windrunner.

Simply badass

That Windrunner is a cool looking system. And apparently at $7,600 it’s also a great deal, their web site says so.

“Of Course at this rock bottom pricing we can not include any extras.”

It’s a top of the line system that costs less than the Barrett 82 and shoots circles around it. 1 MOA guarantee at 1k yards using factory ammo. Completely designed and made in the USA.

And you can get it cheaper than that at gunshows.

FYI maximus83, shooting rifles like these is not a poor man’s sport. You cnanot cheap out on these things.

Heres my history on em. I have never owned one. The 2 guys that I have ever seen with em both sold em within a year. they just said they got tired of em. One went to a custom 338 and the other keeps talking about a windrunner. The only reason to get one is if you have a 1500+ yard range, and the money to drop $2 a round even when you handload. If I had the money for one and the range for one I would probley just go with a 50bmg McBros or a 338 buy GAP. But hey its your cash.

Thanks for the input

I have owned 375 and 408 Chey Tacs, Single shot Bolt and the EDM modified Windrunner version. These are fantastic rifles that shoot very well. When hand loaded at sane pressures 100 percent reliable and beat the 50 bmg for first round extreme range hits. They dont offer the many ammo types and easy to obtain ammo the 50 BMG does though.

These truly are a waste under 1200 yards.

I dont know about litigation but the folks I have dealt with at Chey Tac are very nice to work with. If I had a need for 1200 plus yards on human targets this would be my choice, money not being a worry. With cost considerations and ammo availability the 338 Lapua looks better and better all thew time, plus I can carry my DTA 338 alot farther than any of the CheyTacs.

If you have a need for extreme the CHeyTac is hard to beat.

I have a intervention and it is very accurate. I wont shoot it under 1500 years and have shot it out to 2900 yards. If you need to shoot 2000 yards plus it will get it done.

Desert Tactical now offers the HTI series in 50BMG, 408 Cheytec, 375 Cheytec, and 416 Barrett.

There’s a guy at our range with one who had some problems at first but got them worked out with the manufacturer.

Haven’t posted here in ages but since this is my new thing, I figured I’d share.

Since January, I’ve refocused my shooting away from carbines and more toward long and reaaaalllly long distance shooting. As such, I was carbineless (?) for a couple of months until I figured out that a .408CT is good for home defense for probably only one shot. Granted, what a shot but still only one. (I have since recovered a carbine).

Since .408CT is pretty spendy even with my reloading system up and running, I wanted a “cheaper to shoot” round for this system. Yeah, yeah, stop laughing. .338LM is less expensive and can be found in gunshops pretty easily around here. Reloading it as I do makes it even cheaper.

Bill Ritchie of EDM Arms was nice enough to make a new .338LM barrel, bolt and barrel nut for this system. Took a couple of months and was $2k. Barrel is properly headspaced and it pretty sporty looking with its longitudinal fluting. Both barrels have excellent muzzle brakes.

This reciever will actually accept .50 BMG as well which I may do someday as that would allow me to decrease shooting costs even more for plinking ammo. From what I read, the .375CT is the new big boy on the block and while it can be done, I’m sticking with .408 for now.

With glass being so incredibly spendy, it’s nice to be able to use one scope. For this particular application, I’m using a Leupold Mk4 8.5-25 LRT with their Tactical Milling Reticle. On top in the Barrett BORS system, into which I downloaded all of the performance data from my various .338 and .408 loads.
