My Carbine Buffer on my DD Middy Spr is chewed up like crazy where it contacts the bolt carrier.
Any Idea what causes this, bad anodizing on the buffer??

It could be a burr or uneven surface on your bolt carrier, or your buffer is slamming into the spring loaded buffer retaining pin/thingy. At least that is where I’d start.

this is my carrier after 13 K rd count over about 10 years…
it’s strictly cosmetic and does not effect the function of the buffer at all.
Don’t sweat it…
causes…
Burr on the end of the bolt carrier…
wear happens on metal parts you use over time…
That buffer face has, shall we say, character. How’s the front end?
I think after seeing Harv’s buffer I need to STFU and worry about something else.
Wow.
my LMT Bolt Carrier chewed the living shit out of my Buffer- not like the one above- mine had really deep cuts in it…2 minutes with a dremmel tool/buffing disk- took care if it.
ROFLMAO
I do tend to see that wear on CAR weight buffers more often than not, very rare to see it on H or above weight buffers. Just my small sample…
Yupper… that’s a Bushmaster Standard car Buffer circa 1994.
I only have about less then 2L on a H buffer that came with my BCM upper… no wear at all (and a M16 Fully shrouded LMT carrier as well).
Beat up buffer face is mainly cosmetic and doesn’t affect functioning.
There are buffer pads available but my opinion is that if the buffer is getting beat up then so will the pad and if pieces parts begin falling off and into the action more problems will ensue.

Mine has uneven vertical gouges in it but again,
After seeing the others, I dont think I need to worry about it at all.
Rifle function has been 100% from day one so who gives a crap about it since clearly it is a cosmetic only thing.
Depends on how you define “beat up.” Abrasion consistent with carrier rotation: Fine. Dimpling or impact, something is wrong.
It probably comes from a burr or sharp edge on the the end of the bolt carrier. It happens when you open and close the gun (field strip it). You can usually hear it as a scraping or grinding sound.
It’s not a big deal. But, if it really bothers me, I smooth off any sharp edges or burrs just a little bit with a stone or file.

Never had a problem w/ the front end but did have the “nylon” insert mushroom out and cause a slow down in cycling, not going fully into battery. Changed out buffer, no more problems. To me it was a free reminder to keep an eye on things a little better.

Why I run full circle carriers - and use Colt buffers.
The half circle carriers always seem to have rough edges that tear up the buffer - and some other manufacturers buffers are made of soem dodgey materials – as I’ve had some ukn. ones start to flake, and one that cracked used in an older SP1 lower that I put a telestock on in an early 90’s M4gery BM upper.
