Chest rig setup recommendations.

I am really pleased with the SKD Eagle chest rig, however I really wish the rifle/pistol mag pouches were more like the plastic/Kydex lined rifle/pistol mag pouches they make. I couldn’t find the open top models, I hate the flaps. So imagine these pouches, just without the tops(but with the retention inserts).

Does anyone make a rig that uses the thin Kydex/plastic inserts like Eagle?

If not, this is a heads up that you would have a great seller on your hands. Would you buy it? Please use the poll.

Hell, double up the M4 magazines pouches to hold 8, but still retain the plastic/Kydex inserts.

I use a TT MAV with ITW FastMags. They could be stacked too, for 8 AR 15 mags. I haven’t used the Eagle FB’s, but I see that they’re even more expensive than the FastMags, which are working well for me so far.

The intrepid chest rig

You want 4 AR mag pouches side-by-side and then a double pistol mag pouch on either side? How big a guy are you?

I have, and used for years, the Eagle FB rig you posted at the beginning and being a skinny guy it’s about the most I can fit. I made the mistake of adding a bunch of shit to the sides and al I did was cause problems for myself.

Pistol, in it’s every day carry location, with spare magazine(s) in the every day carry location, comes first.

You’re right, it seems like a lot. I found a TAG rig that looks like I can mold to my needs. I really like the plastic lined open top pouches, but finding a rig that has them is nonexistent.

I just bought an Eagle FB rig and like Rob, I’m a relatively skinny guy. I’ve not had mine long enough to really use it a lot but it does seem about all I can manage without interfering with my belt holster, etc. I’m considering maybe adding one small pouch on my off-side for a multitool but that will probably be it.

I’m interested that you need to skip a column of PALS as the review on Military Morons site has photos that show the FastMags mounted next to one another.

you’re not supposed to link there but you can see the photos at Military Morons, 2008 Gear and Weapon Reviews, ITW/Down East Inc Fast Mag Gen 2 and Gen 3, reviewed 3/24. very concise review with good photos…

Yeh, I’ve seen those pictures at MM’s site. Doesn’t work on my Tactical Tailor implementation of PALS, though…bunches up the pouches and stretches the webbing. Those are Gen II’s in the pictures. Maybe the Gen III’s are different dimensions.

well… that sucks…

The won’t fit side-by-side on my Mini-MAV either. IIRC they fit side-by-side on my BFG battle belt without issue but I’d have to check to be sure. It may be a function of the belt curving more around my hip than the chest rig does around my torso.

they’re a tight fit on my BH chest rig, but they do fit side-by-side without skipping a column of PALS when the chest rig is worn. i do not have a TT rig to try them out on.
reducing bulk and providing different mounting height choices (on a belt) is one of the reasons i designed the IAP open-top mag pouch. can’t stack two IAPs though.

Thanks for the tip. Never been to EMDOM before. Two IAP’s on the way for personal T&E. Looks like they could be a good alternative to both FastMags and EagleFB at $10 cheaper.

that was going to be my next question…

looks like I just found my new pouch! thanks…

Shipped already! Impressive.

I’ve installed a couple of MM’s IAP’s and had a chance to run around the range with the boys a little. I like 'em, pretty much. They’re very secure. The plastic keeps the mouth open well, but I found that re-inserting partial mags fully after tactical reload was hindered by the elastic strap on the lower third - it’s a little too tight. Maybe it will get better with use. I could see myself cutting one half of the elastic if not.

Oh, and I was reminded how much I hate MALICE and why.

Nice stuff, though.
