After reading the very helpful thread about chest rigs I decided to go with the Eagle LE Active Shooter. Very nice rig at a good price.
My consideration was what my needs are. I’m not Mil or LE and I don’t go through lots of training classes. My needs are to have the gear available that I need if awoke in the night to the sounds of a home invasion/burglery.
I need extra mags for my AR, extra mags for my secondary weapon, and a flash light. Also, the chest rig will carry the secondary weapon, a Glock 17.
The Eagle LE Active Shooter holds eight AR mags. For my needs eight seemed like to much and after loading it out I was sure of it! The pouches hold one mag each very securely and they don’t move around. If I ever need eight mags the pouches will hold them. Three pistol mag pouches and the last pistol mag pouch for my flash light. That gives me three Ar mags, three G17 mags, flash light, and secondary weapon all one package to grab and go.
Here is my question. I’ve seen pictures of pistols being carried in AR mag pouches on chest rigs. Is it safe carrying a Glock in this manner? I am really paranoid about protecting the trigger on this pistol. My G17 fits really well in the right outside pouch, is position just right and the mag flap and buckle hold it very securely.
Anyone have or hear anything negative about carrying a Glock in this way?
Honestly I wouldn’t worry much about donning an active shooter rig during a home invasion. Carrying an extra mag would be enough in that type of situation. If you find yourself needing that much in a home burglary/invasion then chances are you are well… fucked. Put a light on your AR rather than using a handheld version to make PID (Positive IDentification) easier.
Now for classes, I would suggest dumping one of your Glock mags for another AR mag since they take up about the same amount of space and personally I would much rather have the extra ammo for my primary rather than my secondary. If you need a light for your secondary, then carry a smaller light in your pocket rather than your kit. Use the weaponlight on your AR as your primary for low-light training.
As for your Glock, I think you shouldn’t have any trouble with it inside a mag pouch. As long as the trigger is protected from snagging and it is being held securely in place, it shouldn’t be any different than having it in a holster. Maybe you can try stuffing a slim holster inside of the mag pouch to help keep the trigger protected?
Doing all of this would streamline your kit and make it a little more purpose-built for your needs. This is how I would do it, YMMV.
