Finally just got registered here. Looks like a good site, and I had been meaning to jump-in since sometime last year.
Some of you here may know me from arfcom over the past few years, and more recently on akforum. Also more locally in central VA, working with Templar running Cavalier’s IDPA monthly rifle and shotgun side matches. Especially to these folks: Hey!
What finally got me off the stump? Well, I just put a new AR on lay-a-way! ! ! It’s one of the S&W M&P’s, the flatop version with flip-up rear sight.
By way of background, I had shot handgun almost exclusively for over a decade (first IPSC then IDPA) before getting interested in rifles. Like most folks, I started out with an AR and have since owned a couple, along with double that number in AK’s. My only current rifle though is an Arsenal SLR-106, which I had been considering over the past couple months of complimenting with another AR. Figured especially with the dems now in majority, a new ban would be only a matter of time.
Well then along came the recent news indicating they’re not loosing any time over it, so I jumped ahead to reserve the AR now. Have until the end of May to pick it up, but hopefully will round-up the required scratch before then. Shall of course also need to stock an adequate supply of mags and good brass-cased ammo (I’ve been feeding the AK that filthy Wolf, but it’s OK…it likes it).

I picked up an Aimpoint ML2 for a good price from the arfcom EE a month or so ago, which is ready and waiting to go atop the M&P.
The only other thing I see doing (other than mags and ammo) is a simple light set-up. I’ve got a Surefire G2 that I’m thinking of mounting to the front sight. Looks like MI makes a short clamp-on pic rail – something like that would be good. Any other recommendations welcomed.
You can also add a Streamlight rail and use a pistol light, I did on my wifes SBR. Actually today I’ll be installing my ARES G35 piston kit on this AR since I can’t find a rail to fit of the spigot and piston and the ARES comes with it’s own M4 handguards. If you want these ones with the light rail let me know.
Are the gas-piston conversions getting big among AR folks these days?
Also, where are people now getting bulk-quantity brass-cased .223? I used to have good results using XM193 from ammoman.com, but boy – the prices sure have gone up over the past couple of years! (During which I’ve been feeding my AK’s solely with Wolf.)

And also yes, I’ve heard a lot of pretty high praise for the M&P’s, both rifles and pistols. Their compact 9mm could be a possible replacement for my G19 if it fits my hand any better – need to go take another look.
