CHECK THOSE CHAMBERS!

And follow the 4 rules.

This just happened locally. I go into this store periodically. The guy in question NEVER checks the chamber before he hands me a gun that I ask to see.

Well, it just bit him.

Apparently some doofus brought in a loaded Sig P226 to be worked on…:nono:

(Don’t carry around a loaded gun that isn’t functioning correctly especially to be worked on)

They took out the magazine but he didn’t clear the chamber and then he pulled the trigger and shot himself in the hand.

CHECK YOUR CHAMBERS AND FOLLOW THE 4 RULES!

Just because you work in a gun shop doesn’t make you exempt.

Thank goodness it was only his hand.

I agree that you should check the chamber on any gun handed to you, but I would put this on the owner of the gun as well. Should have cleared it before bringing it in.

I don’t know this particular guy, but I can say with certainty that there are quite a few local (to me) gun shop employees I wish this would happen to. Both because they are grossly inept with handling firearms, and because they’re just total jackasses.

Oh, and check the chamber COMPLETELY! I had a dumbass one time at a store I was working at bring in a commercial Makarov to sell or trade with a .380 round down in it rather than 9x18 Mak it was chambered for. Dumbass had apparently thought they were interchangable. It fit down into the chamber further down into the barrel than what I would expect to look for. I had racked the slide a few times and saw nothing sticking out the sides of the chamber so I thought it was good, not actually looking down into the barrel itself. I never dry fire any guns but mine as a rule and boy did it pay off when maybe after a couple of minutes I handed it to another guy working the counter who did see it. He asked in a rather LOUD tone of voice if that gun had been checked at the front desk first–I felt so stupid at that point I let the conversation continue between them and not me.

It never ceases to amaze me . . .

Until they shoot some bystander.

I agree 100%.

That is why I referred to that guy as a doofus.

The gentlemen that shot his own hand is an incredibly nice and patient guy who made a mistake because he isn’t in the habit of checking the chambers on guns. Which he should be.

The moron guy who had a broken gun and brought it in loaded and handed it to him was definitely a doofus though.

Who on earth brings a loaded gun into a gunsmith to be worked on?

Yet another teachable moment. I made a copy of this for the safety portion of my firearms classes.

Idiots like this are as much a danger as the open carry look at me whores who want to flood Chipotle and Starbucks.

I bet he doesn’t dry fire another gun pointed at his hand ever again.

He failed 4 out of 4 of “THE” safety rules.

Good reminder to always be vigilant. Sux to be him for sure, but thankfully there was nothing more valuable behind his hand like other person.

I tend to be pretty anal about the 4 rules; even when I am 100% certain the gun is unloaded it doesn’t sweep things, people or any parts there of.

No matter how you slice it, you are responsible for your own safety. If I were handed a firearm and shot myself in the hand with it, I’m the guy with the hole in his hand. I’m the guy who was unsafe, not the guy who handed it to me- he didn’t shoot anyone. CHECK THOSE CHAMBERS

Those are the two pre-reqs for gun counter work.

The gun is always loaded.
