FOBUS = trash…
Mace
Yes! I’ve heard this before. What specifically is bad about fobus? Materials or design?
Certainly there are better options for one’s main carry holster. But for casual range sessions or barbqueing around the house I like having a quick-on/off carry method. (yes, i do have my pistol on me even at home) I used to use an uncle mikes kydex, but it cracked from material fatigue.
I have never tried their paddles. I did however use a fobus ankle holster for years. I found it to be anything but trash. I even ran the bases in a picnic softball game without a problem.
I have personally never used a FOBUS, however our department training staff conducted a demo to caution on the use of these holsters off-duty and for court appearances. In the demo, the holster was able to be ripped off it’s paddle during attempted retention against a gun-grab, allowing the BG to take control of the weapon. I haven’t personally bought one because the one’s I’ve seen are the riveted ones, that they demoed and that don’t allow for adjusting the retention. I personally prefer Comptac and Sidearmor, I haven’t been able to try a Blade-tech yet. These do cost more, but are of finer materials and construction than my cheapy Uncle Mike’s or the Fobus I’ve seen. At least the UM allows you to adjust the tension, and it seems to be made out of thicker material, although I just use it for a range loaner.

Dig it! I think I’d take a fobus over the shitty blackhawk kydex that I just replaced though. That holster sucked for even barbque use! ![]()
The most recent holster I bought is the Safariland 5188. I’m not big on paddle holsters, but again… I like having one decent paddle for bee bopping around the house or light range stuff…![]()
I was suprised at what a value the 5188 is. I bought it for like $35, and I thought for sure it would be a let down. But it is actually a really solid piece of gear worthy of carry use… Heavy Safariland material in the holster, and it’s lined too.
I sold the Fobus holsters when they first came out. We sold a ton of them until the local PDs banned them due to the crappy rivet jobs and the holsters falling apart on their own, let alone when someone grabbed the gun.
The new ones have been reinforced to fix the crappy rivet jobs with some other inprovements. I havent tried one though.
Here’s a video…
