Changing trigger pull weight what parts to replace?

I have a national Match hardball gun which has developed a trigger pull weight below the match legal four pounds. I need to swap some parts to bring the weight back up ( I know rare to want to increase weight but the pistol is useless for matches when weight is below minimum) I suspect starting with the sear spring is the most likely to help and easiest. Can anyone offer further advice?

You could try the mainspring. How much do you need to gain? If not much a new mainspring might put you over the minimum.

First try teaking the center leg of the sear spring.

You’re going to need a set of trigger pull weights to check your progress, I don’t believe any of the gauges available are accurate enough.

Thanks so far- yes I do have a set of trigger weights. I can see tweaking replacing the sear spring can help but fail to see how doing anything with the mainspring ( which regulates hammer fall and resistance to cocking) would have any effect on trigger pull weight?

As the mainspring wears from repeated cycles, it’ll surely weaken over time. Less pressure on the hammer/sear engagement surfaces will reduce the friction between the parts and decrease the pull weight.

Now it’s also possible you could replace the spring and gain nothing… but it’s an option.

I second the mainspring theory. They’re offered in a variety of weights and will definitely increase your trigger pull. I would start with stock weight, then work your way up. Wolff carries a full line of 1911 hammer/mainsprings. Some guy on Ebay is selling like 8 different weights or something ridiculous.

I wwouldnt replace the mainspring. Especially if you shoot anything with Wolf primers. Tinker with the sear spring to get the pull down.

he wants to go the other way.

Why don’t you just PM LAV or Ned Christiansen?

In my limited experience with the 1911, I have learned that just about everything can play a part in trigger pull weight. The main spring and sear spring along with the length of the sear and the angle of the trigger bar(?). That metal thingy that’s attached to the trigger (more feel than weight)…
Regular wear will reduce the trigger pull weight.

4lbs is not very light.

I would run a stock Colt mainspring and have someone tune the sear spring.

While the mainspring does play a part in the trigger pull, it’s not where you go to try to adjust the pull weight.

Post pics of the hardball gun. I think they’re purty!

My hardball gun is a standard les Baer national match hardball.
I replaced the trigger spring ( not the mainspring) and brought her back to a hair over 4.5 pounds. All is well. Thanks for all the help folks
