Changed Running Shoes Knees Are Thanking Me

I took the wife to the New Balance store today intent on getting her shoes and leaving. I looked around while she tortured the poor sales guy. This nice little Romanian lady who holds some sort of 10 year old running record there, pointed the way toward a new set of running shoes. I have been led to believe for some time that I pronate with everything whether it’s ski boots, hockey skates, or even running shoes. I decided to look at neutral cast shoes, and tried on a pair of New Balance 880s. I get home and go for a 3 mile run. No pain in the knees and I feel great. Who da thunk it after all these years??? Then again I did work my butt off changing my stride from heel strike to just forward of middle so maybe that’s it, or there is a combination of factors, but I’m never going back to a control shoe again.

Yeah, I used to over pronate too and stability shoes killed my feet. There are other ways to fix pronation problems

Running shoe technology sure has progressed over the past few years.

I’m a New Balance fan myself. I have found a good running shoe and I stick with it.

I had the same issue. I thought I over-pronated for a long time and wore Asics with the support truss in it (forget what they call it), and my knees hurt like hell and were always tender. I switched to a neutral pair of new balances and almost all of my knee pain is gone. What model shoe did you pick up?

I bought the 880. I’m in a New Balance store mind you and it seemed as if most of their shoes had the pronation control in them. Outside of some muscle soreness from not running the hills for two months due to available light and weather, I feel pretty good. No discernable knee pain. I was going to continue using the old 940’s for treadmill and weights during the week and reserve these for my longer Wednesday runs but I’m starting to believe that that is the wrong approach.

I also found that this shoe has better traction than the 940. I was running on wet dirt roads yesterday which are a combination of sand, clay and gravel. No slippage at all. I think the lugs are a bit deeper on this shoe compared to the 940.
