People posing as police officers for home invasions has been on the rise lately, this is a new approach. I do not answer my front door without first looking through the peep hole and secondly being armed along with an extremely protective Boxer by my side. HOUSTON—A man was killed and his family members beaten after three suspects barged into a north Houston home Saturday afternoon, police said.

Investigators said one of the suspects pretended to be a census worker to gain entry into the house, located in the 400 block of Truman.

Family members said the victim’s son opened the door for the suspects, believing they were with the census.

Larry Johnson Jr., the nephew of the victim, said the suspects tied up and beat his cousin and aunt after barging into to the home.

Johnson said his uncle, Reginald “Pete” Haynes, walked in on the crime and was ambushed.

“They tied him up and stabbed him and tried to submerge him in water,” Johnson said.

Haynes later died at the hospital.

Family members said the men ransacked the house for two hours.

“They were looking for money and my aunt gave them everything that they had and it wasn’t enough for them,” Johnson said.

Neighbor Randell Harmon said he even watched the suspects leave after the crime and had no idea what had happened.

“I saw three gentlemen walk out and I didn’t think anything of it,” Harmon said. “They didn’t look at me. They got in the truck and they left.”

The incident left people in the community fearful about who might come knocking at their door.

“They’ve taken something precious from us,” Johnson said. “They really have.”

Neighbors said census-takers started working their street weeks ago.

According to HPD, the suspect who claimed to be a census worker showed no ID badge. Investigators said they don’t have a good description of any of the suspects.

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – A volunteer Census worker who made his rounds earlier this week is now accused of returning to a physically handicapped woman’s home this weekend and beating her and raping her.

WHAS11’s Adrianna Hopkins was in Pekin, Indiana on Sunday where the crime happened, and spoke to the neighbors and friends of both the victim, and the accused.

“I had no reason to be afraid or anything of him,” said Debbie Bishop. “He was just a nice ordinary person.”

That’s what Bishop thought last Tuesday when she met Daniel Miller. The self-employed tile-layer and volunteer Census worker drove up her road, stopping at the homes listed on his Census forms.

The two had a short conversation and she answered all of his Census questions.

“He just seemed really nice, he was actually he was over friendly,” Bishop said.

But if what Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies say about Miller is true, Debbie says she’s sorely mistaken.

Police say that same Tuesday, Miller also stopped by Debbie’s neighbor’s house. Then, that Saturday, at 4:30 in the morning, police say he returned to her neighbor’s home, broke in, and beat and raped the 21-year-old physically handicapped woman who lives there with her mother.

“It’s not right. She had no choice, you know,” said Bishop. “You don’t do that.”

The victim’s mother talked to us off-camera, and said while she was sleeping, Miller raped her daughter,
then left his clothes in her daughter’s room.

A neighbor says Miller then drove around the house as if he was drunk.

WHAS11 News went to Miller’s house and according to his friends, he had been drinking Friday night.

Miller lives in an apartment complex by a nice, family friendly neighborhood. It’s within eyeshot of Eastern High School and East Washington Middle School.

WHAS11 News was told Miller’s been married for 13 years and has two daughters. His friend Timothy Mattingly says he’s shocked Daniel was arrested for this crime.

“I went fishing with him almost all the time,” he said. “He was nice and friendly.”

Debbie Bishop says she’s realized you can’t trust people because you never really know who they are.

“There’s no way to describe what I think about a person like that,” Bishop said. “It’s not even thinkable. There’s no way a person like her should be treated like that. It gives me chill bumps thinking about it.”

Miller was transported to the Washington County Detention Center where he’s being held with no bond. He will appear in court on Monday.

A Census Bureau worker was the victim of a carjacking in Hamden, and the suspect is just 14-years-old.

The 50-year-old Hamden resident was sitting in his car, clearly marked with a Census Bureau sign, on Hamden Park Drive Thursday around 6:00 p.m., according to police.

The victim told police the teen came up to him with a gun and ordered him out of the car, then stole money from him.

Jumping in the car, the teen sped away, but returned a short time later and ordered the victim to drive him to the First Street area, police said.

The teen jumped out of the car at First Street and fled on foot.

Working with several leads, police arrested the 14-year-old suspect around 9:00 p.m. Thursday night.

He is charged with carjacking, first-degree kidnapping with a firearm, first-degree robbery and larceny. Police did not release the teen’s identity because of his age.

A man with a U.S. census badge knocked on Amy Schmalbach’s door on May 4. Thinking that answering the door to a government worker was a safe bet, she did. And then she wondered why he looked so familiar.

As soon as the man left her Pennsauken home, Schmalbach realized where she had seen him before: on the state’s sex-offender registry.

“I figured this is a government worker, I’m safe,” Schmalbach, 33, told the Inquirer. She had given him names and birthdates of her family to the man who called himself “Jamie.”

The man’s real name is Frank J. Kuni, but goes by many aliases, including Jamie Shepard. It was under the name “Jamie Shepard” that he applied for a door-to-door job with the census bureau.

Schmalbach verified on the sex-offender registry that the man who was knocking on doors in her neighborhood was indeed the 47-year-old Kuni who has been convicted of assaulting an underage girl, and having “inappropriate contact with two other victims,” according to the registry.

Then Schmalbach called police and warned her neighbors.

“If I had not recognized who this person was, none of my neighbors would have, and I believe he would have continued to go door to door,” Schmalbach told the Inquirer.

Kuni was arrested Monday on charges of false representation and impersonating a public official, according to police.

A census official told the Inquirer that a “Jamie Shepard” had been hired in late April after passing the name check, but was fired May 5, as he failed the fingerprint check.

The census hired about 600,000 people to work home visits in the last week of April, Fernando E. Armstrong, director for the Philadelphia region, told the Inquirer.

“When you are looking at 600,000 people going through this check, you can understand that it doesn’t always work the way it should,” Armstrong said.

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2Now.com) - A Census worker’s dog took a bite out of a South St. Louis man. Dan Vacca says a census worker approached him outside his South St. Louis condo on Tuesday. He thought it was odd that the worker had his dog with him. While he was answering questions, Vacca says the dog jumped up and bit him in the stomach. He is not pleased to say the least and wonders why the worker was allowed to leave with the dog.

Animal control officer says it will monitor the dog for rabies. The case will be reviewed to see if the dog can remain with it’s owner.

I had one come to my door, she said that she was there because we didn’t return our form, which we did, a couple days before the deadline. She said that was why she was there, because we returned it late. I told her maybe they should get my answers off the form when it arrives, and to get the fuck off my porch.

I heard about 2 of those over the last week. People sure aren’t making this job any easier. I dont know how the sex offender got hired. Background checks and fingerprints are mandatory.

Didn’t Acorn, that helped Obama get elected get the majority of the Census work? If so, that would explain these incidents.

The census guy practicaly ambushed me outside my condo one day after work… he had left one of those “Sorry I missed You” notes on my door the day before…

As I was walking to my door I saw him rounding the corner of the building… I tried to walk faster but did not want to make it obvios lol. F*cker cought up with me and I was stuck there answering his questions…

Damnit!

We forgot to mail ours in and the census taker showed up at the door 2 weeks ago. My simply handed her the form and told her the answers were all in there and good day.

Last week she came back because we’d only filled out the number of people living here, nothing else. My wife talked to her for about 30 minutes asking “Why do you need that information” or “What does that question have to do with the number of people in our household" at nearly every question asked. I almost pitied the poor woman. She told my wife she had to go to 40 hours of training to do this and we were asking questions no one had ever talked to her about. :stuck_out_tongue:

I know that was the plan. Public outcry caused them to either abandon it (unlikely, IMHO) or just do it a lot quieter…

I do know the Census recruited very heavily from college campuses (they had a table at my college for a month and a half). Naturally, this is not coincidental, as unsurprisingly, there are Obama stickers on cars all over the damn campus. Colleges are naturally a host of true believers…

I just answered the guy’s questions… I felt bad enough for him as it is thinking about how people prolly just tell him to f-off… he’s just trying to earn a buck. Plus, honestly, I don’t care if the Gov knows my GF and I live together and are not married lol.

Pissed her off when she saw the check box for “Unmarried Partner” lol

Asshole came back to my door today, my roommate is much nicer than I am so she answered his questions. Apparently a bunch of forms are missing and ours is one of them. :rolleyes:
