Cell Phone & wallet stolen today- what next?

I am still hoping you got interrupted during your pocket emptying routine and your stuff is in your laundry.

1- Are you sure they’re not in your apartment, just someplace you don’t normally place them? Maybe in a jacket pocket, pants pocket from the night before, &c.
2- Are you sure you locked your apartment door? Was the door still locked when you woke up and noticed your things missing?

Quoting this to bring it back to the forefront. This is stupid good advice.

Could have been a previous tenant if they did not change locks. Saw that once.

I recently did a credit freeze with all three companies. I expected an arduous process of talking to many people but I did it all online, spoke to no one, and it was very easy. It’s easy to undo too if need be.

HA- Ive checked that laundry a dozen times! No, they arent here. Cell goes to voice, which it never does, and they just arent here.
As for the door. On this particular door, you HAVE to engage the deadbolt for it to stay shut. The door was locked by me- was unlocked when I woke up.
Someone earlier said something about being more worried about someone entering my apt. than the cell phone. Well, i agree. But, I work 7 days a week, at night, and sleep like a hibernating bear during the day. I cannot help someone broke into, or entered, or whatever, my apt while I was sleeping. Believe me, Im pissed. Ill be getting some form of alarm this week, still looking & studying.

Maybe they were already in there when you got home and just let themselves out and grabbed a quick pick on the way out…

Some apartment managers hire maintenence guys on the cheap and they have master keys. Would keep an eye out for one that seems shady. They come in to do repairs and see what you have in the apartment then come back later when they know you are on vacation or work. Had reports of a maintenance guy staying in people’s apartments because they would come home to the air being colder than they left it and the tv on.

Don’t you have a ‘find my phone’ app or something like that to see where your phone is? My 80 y/o mother in California misplaced her iPhone. I’m in Tennessee and told her where it was at her neighbor across the street.

Yes, didnt work.

Could it have been someone you know with access to your home? Ex-spouse, ex-fiance, pissed off step kids? Pissed off teenage kids? current angry partner? Angry family member? In law? The list goes on…

Nope…all alone here.
Further proof- Weds morning about 0300 someone tried to use my card- in DETROIT MI. They got nothing of course.

If someone hasn’t already mentioned it, check Equifax, Experian and Transunion or however they are spelled and make sure no one has opened credit in your name.

This is no good to you now, but let me share with the group. Years ago I was advised to take your wallet to a copy machine and take a front and back of everything in your wallet. There is stuff in there you won’t remember and you don’t have to research all the numbers you need.

I had my wallet stolen in Hawaii and had my SIL go to the file and email it to me, closed everything down, and minimized to only cash damage and PITA.

I still do this today.
