Cell Phone & wallet stolen today- what next?

Woke up this evening to find someone had entered my apt, whilst I was asleep, and took my cell & wallet of my desk.
I discovered this about 1930 tonight. I got up to pee & check for a work text about 10:30-11:30 or so…so between then & 1930 it was taken during the day. Cant understand why they didnt take some meds & a Spyderco and car keys laying right beside the stolen items. In a drawer right under them was a Shield. Thank God they didnt get those.
So-Im LIVID to say the least.
So, in the morning, going to bank to freeze my accnt & get a new card.
Gonna go and get an old phone I still have up & running.
Gonna file a police report, or whatever good that will do.
What else am I missing, in my not rationale at the moment mind?
SS Card, HCP. med cards all got to be replaced.
Anything else I need do?

How did they get in?
Need to change locks?

Put a credit lock on all three of the Credit Agencies- Equifax, Experian, and Transunion ASAP https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0497-credit-freeze-faqs

Get a copy of the police report and carry it with you everywhere you go for the next 12 months minimum. Scan a copy to your phone, keep a copy with your registration and proof of insurance in your car, and keep a copy in your wallet.

The reason you want a copy of the police report is that it is not uncommon for people to steal your identity. Professionals have the same equipment that state DMV’s have and can burn a DL with your info and their picture inside of 5 minutes that will pass tight scrutiny- after all, it has all of your information right down to your DL number on it.

These people do it so that they can commit crimes with it.

Then it is your name and info attached to the citations and inevitable warrants for failure to appear. You don’t want to get picked up on a Friday night for speeding and spend a long holiday weekend in jail. The copy of the stolen wallet and ID report gives proof to cops/booking officers in jails/judges who are inured to hearing all about how SODDI (Some other dude did it) that you are likely telling the truth and keep you from spending the weekend eating bologna sandwiches.

My ex-wife had her identity stolen when we refinanced our house, and in a 72 hour period, people racked up $80K in bogus instant credit in the ATL area, flew from LAX to ATL and back using a fake ID in her name, picked up a DUI, a shopliftingcharge, and a criminal mischief charge in 3 different jurisdictions in the LAX and ATL areas.

I arrested then cited and released a guy for DUI who had found a DL, returned it to the guy within 2 days, but managed to get DMV to issue him a replacement DL in the name of the guy who lost the DL.

The guy who lost the DL wasn’t suspicious since he got his DL back in 2 days by mail in an unmarked envelope. He found out what had happened when he got arrested for Failure to Appear on the DUII warrant I had arrested the other guy for. The guy who lost the DL was arrested in another state where he had gotten pulled over for speeding while he was on vacation-He got released after 10 days in jail after I was sent a picture of the poor SOB and said he was not the guy I arrested. I was fishing in the backwoods and was not able to be contacted before then.

I hunted the guy who gave me the bogus DL down with a vengeance because it was personal-it took me 3 months-and I only found him because I had the girlfriend passenger’s name. I got her parents to tell me the guy’s name with a promise to not charge their daughter with harboring a felon. A lot of cops wouldn’t have probably cared enough to bother.

No forced entry- gonna see about a lock change tomorrow. No clue yet.

Deadbolt? Motion sensor alarm? Get something like a Targus Defcon CL and hang it on your inside doorknob–anybody opens the door and that sucker screams.

Was your window open? Just spitballing thoughts here.

iphone ? remote wipe your phone
also set lost mode or stolen so it won’t be useable
not sure what android has for that ?

bummer bad feeling I am sure so yeah how did they get in would be bugging me

Some kind of security. If they will walk in (assuming they didn’t break in) while you are at home, they might be back. Visible camera system would be a cost effective deterrence. They didn’t touch your keys because they make noise and your meds have almost zero street value probably.

High probability this is someone who lives in your building.

You know this now but keep all of your info on your computer and print out a hard copy so you have a backup of everything most of us keep on our phone.

Straightshooter, go back and read my post if you missed it.

No need to call all three credit agencies. Just call one and lock your file, they will let the other two know.

Get a dog…

Thanks CrashAxe & all others…I stayed in tonight…in case. Will have to start the process in the morning of shuttin down everything. No bank or card hits yet, tho. I appreciate the info.

Someone got my SS# earlier this year and took out a couple of credit cards and racked up some charges…I made a police report and a USPS report since they stopped my mail. Luckily after a few months the credit card companies sent me letters I am not responsible for the charges…

When this happened I froze my credit, called the SS administration, IRS and did a FTC.gov report and got credit monitoring monthly and called the DMV. I think I did everything possible to avoid any problems… I also have cameras and a home security system at my house…

I have a 2 to 3 inch folder with documentation of my issue…ugh

That’s for a fraud alert. And they don’t necessarily let the other agencies know.

I’d to a full blown credit freeze with all three agencies.

Man, I’m sorry to hear that. The only advice I would have besides doing a police report is to look around the apartment grounds near your place because they may have just looked for cash in a wallet and thrown it in the bushes.

I had someone go to a bank where my wife and I had an account.

The guy looked sort of looked like me and had a drivers license with my name, his picture, and MY DL number and address. Withdrew thousands. Bank called us after he went to a few branches.

A got a call from a detective about it but never heard anything else.

I’ve kept the credit (the 3 credit agencies) completely locked down ever since. So does the wife.

When I need to open it I go through the process and then lock it down again.

It happens.

I did do that brother!
But-they didnt get much, if anything. No cash in the wallet, no CC card, already got a new Debit card, they hadnt took any money out yet, surprisingly. The cell phone will be utterly useless to them, and I already got an older one back up & running this morning. So…all thats left is a new DL, SS card, and HCP and im back to normal.
Even ordered me a new, USA made wallet this morning. Thank all yall for advice & help!

You carry your SS card?

I have fantasies of finding these people and killing them and then collecting my own life insurance and going around A-team style and putting the smack down on cyber criminals.

I know brother…I wont from now on. Just have carried for several decades and not thought anything about it. Ill be changing that.
If you ever put together a team…

Having my wallet and cell phone stolen would be concerning. Home security so inadequate as to allow an intruder to invade my home without being alerted would be far more concerning.
