CARSON: Why did the founders give us the Second Amendment?

“The way we treat access to automobiles is a good starting point, although there is no perfect analogy.”

These are not the comments I want to hear from someone who holds so much sway with Republicans. He draws the analogy between firearms and drivers licensing, while admitting its not the best analogy.

Owning a firearm and operating a motor vehicle both come with great responsibility, yet I ask you to show me where the Constitution enumerates the right to unfettered ownership and use of transportation.

Firearms are already, probably the most legislatively regulated consumer product in the history of our country. When will they stop searching for that one perfect law?

Carson is very anti-gun. He’s gone on record saying they’re okay if you’re in a rural area, but not in the city. I would not support him.

Actually in CO you have to take class and re-take the class every few years for a CCP. With a car, its one and done from when Reagan was in office. I can only have a CCP if I have a clean record, not so with a car. If I were found on the street with a gun and with out a permit I’m off to jail, with a car its a ticket and on your way. Illegal aliens can get drivers licenses.

To drive a race car on a closed course I don’t need a license and I don’t need a gun permit to shoot at the range. If I want to drive on the street or walk around with a gun under my jacket I need a license. I didn’t get fingerprinted or have a background check when I got my driver’s license, where is the issue??? Plus drivers licenses are 50 state (on overseas) legal and are ‘Shall Issue’.

Who is this guy?

Ben Carson is a black neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins and a rather prolific speaker. He made headlines about a year ago at the National Prayer Breakfast when he spoke critically of the AFC in front of Obama.

He holds conservative fiscal views and espouses the virtues of personal responsibility in most of his speeches. His own story is rather impressive since he pull himself out of urban poverty despite a horrible personal situation.

Like most of the medical community, he does not hold the 2nd Amendment in high regard. I’m not optimistic that he would be a viable candidate for national office. However, he’d probably make one helluva HHS Secretary.

To protect the people from their own government. Simple as that. Boy i sure could go for a range trip right about now!

You don’t know many physicians then.

I have no dog in this hunt, but just FYI the man you quoted is a trauma surgeon.

Here’s your sign.

If all the digits are removed from various orifices now, let’s get back to chatting about Dr. Carson, shall we?

Sensei, a question for you, if you have some thoughts. What kind of impact could a pro- or anti-gun HHS secretary have now? We have all heard of the questions patients are asked regarding gun ownership, etc. Plus I believe there have been NIH and CDC studies which honestly seemed a bit slanted against responsible gun owners, at least to my eyes.

Could a US Surgeon General or HHS Secretary swing a relatively large bat to help us, in that regard? Just curious about your thoughts. Thanks.

I know what you’re referring to, but that’s not what he said. I can tell you that he is definitely NOT “anti-gun.”

Judging from the comments in this thread so far, I can tell you he is much more pro-gun than people think. I speak from firsthand information.

First hand as in he articulated his positions on the matter to you directly or? Given what public verbal offerings I have seen of his no he doesn’t strike me as “anti-gun” in the classic gun grabber sense were all use to necessarily, but he is certainly not pro-gun the 2A is absolute type of guy either. The guys a high level medical practitioner so given his skew on things from his experiences his position(s)does not necessarily surprise me. The mans a competent surgeon, that does not automatically make him competent to the extreme in public policy and/or history.

Good question. It probably would help to change the dialogue. It could also have some impact on funding for research that so far has been biased against firearms.

Thanks, I was wondering about that.

I’m always very wary of confirmation bias, and usually try to determine what “filters” were present when somebody wrote a check for some research. I’m a IT geek, and we see it all the time. Brand X has the bestest computer evar, and Brand Y will not only set your server farm on fire, but likely sterilize the people in the building at the same time.

Guess who paid for that study?

But the vast majority of people doing research have (A) integrity and (B) a soul, so I’ve always wondered how big a deal it would be.

Dr. Carson has an interesting take on current events, so it’s something to ponder. I don’t have television, so I tend to snag a few books to read every week. I have one of his on the nightstand pile right now.

That would be the most positive impact I could think of, if nothing else try to make whatever research as nonpartisan and objective as possible. Similar to UCR data but obviously not the same.
