Carrier Key Fit

Hi all, I’m getting ready to install a carrier key to the bolt carrier, but I found that the width of the channel (.405") in the carrier is a few thou larger than the width of the key base (.400"). Is this normal? When I torque the bolts to spec, will the slack allow the key some side to side play? Do I need to do something to the carrier channel to fit the key? Thanks!

Here’s what I would do.

  1. Make sure the top of the key is smooth and free of any burrs. The same with the bottom of the key. I would use some real fine emery cloth and hit them up.

  2. Make sure that you are using good screw and not some cheap crap. Degrease them and then use some red Loc-tite on the screws.

  3. Position the key and then tighten the screws just enough so the key is in place and won’t move. Then slide it into the upper receiver and make sure that the carrier will go in all the way and that the key is mating with the gas tube correctly.

  4. If you are happy with it then pull it out, tighten the screws the rest of the way (58 in./lbs) and then stake it with a MOACKS.
