Career, college, job security, economy...

I’m looking at going back to school but I’m not sure what to major in. I currently work at a large health insurance company and with the health care going to be passed I’m trying to look ahead towards a career. My job is pretty safe even if we were to seriously downsize, I’m pretty confident that I would still have a job. Insurance will always be around it could completely change in the future though, to something similiar to the medicare supplemental plans. Anyways, just putting my feelers out there. Just curious as to what every here does and if you went to college what did you major in? Have you gone back to school and changed fields etc?

BBA MIS degree, went to work in heath care at large multi-specialty facility. Started on networking side, now I have moved in the biz. office to work the back end of EHR processing and billing. We recently went live with both EHR/EPM. Change fields…tough to say, I feel secure in the position, but this is far from my passion. Ive considered going back for MBA, but havent pulled the trigger. I think I would like being in healthcare software sales or something where I could interact with people more. I would stick around health care since you already have exp. though. I spend my evenings working on a web startup and just submitted my first application for angel help. Ideally, I would like to be self-employed.

Get a degree in Finance and/or accounting. The money will always be important. Later on you could get an MBA and get into executive management.

my advise is become a super rich banker.

In September I got laid off from a large health insurance company after over five years. Before that I was in corporate retail Merchandising and Marketing. I am seeing the bulk of openings out there are in IT, programmers and database administrators, or RNs, physicians, Physical or Occupational Therapists.

Due to the economy, many more people are going back to school and tuitions are spiking as well.

I got my BS in Mass Comm in '94 and have changed fields at least twice. Good luck out there.

James Brown is looking great these days.

I tried IT at ITT Tech and didn’t like it. I also found out by going there that I’m at a 7th or 8th grade math level:o I used to be interested in psychology and sociology, but after being overseas I couldn’t do it nowadays, my treatment would consist of “Life is hard, quit being a pussy, suck it up and drive on.”

I’ve heard quite a few times people ask other people what they would want to do if money were no object, the only 2 things that come to mind are the military, not feasible or that’s what I’d be doing as I’m still very young at 26 but blew out my knee playing baseball right before my National Guard contract was up and was gonna go active :frowning: I could probably get my knee well enough to pass a pt test and be a pogue but if I can’t go infantry I don’t really wanna do it.

Anyways, I’ve recently became interested in advertising and marketing. Just seeing billboards and commercials on tv, I know I can do better than most of the ads out there and come up with some funny shit. I’ve also been told by many that I’d be good at stand up, but I don’t think I’m that funny and goofy. Between the GI Bill and my work paying for school, I’m pretty much gonna be going for free.

Nursing… lots of options, diversity, great $ potential, growth industry and they need more now.

FAA is hiring new controllers like crazy. Great career. Look into it as long as your under 31 yo and can obtain a security clearance. It’s a demanding profession that is both challenging and rewarding. Not for everyone tho. Takes alot to make it

Remember that to get into the marketing you see on network TV, you’re going to have to attend a big-time program.

Whatever form health ‘reform’ takes, it’s going to be a boon to insurance companies - all the numbers bear this out (as does their stance on the issue). That’s a safe field to remain in if you’ve already got a start.

OK, as long as I don’t have to wear any pink!
