carbine stock staking (comparison)

Colt

STAG/early S&W (very weak, but better than none, before using I would redo it)

Bushmaster (non existent staking, before using I would stake this)

Rock River Arms (they don’t stake they blue Loc-Tite. I would heat and remove this stock, clean off the Loc-Tite reassemble and then torque and stake)

The gotm4 (this is a VLTOR complete stock assy on a Colt 6721 lower)

Any particular type puch and ball-peen hammer for this job?

I use a spring loaded punch and hit it about 5-6 times pushing the metal into the relieved area of the castle nut.

Thanks. No hammer?

Good post Robb!

You can do it with a punch and hammer but it’s harder to control it.

Here’s some pics of the factory staking on my LMT.

There’s my little contribution. Great thread!

Got it. Thanks once again. I used a spring loaded punch. Came out good.

Bump to untack…

I normally run one of Knight’s QD sling adapters, which replaces both the standard castle nut and plate. Should i just be able to stake the mount into the nut?

Thx.

You should be able to, I run a Daniel Defense aluminum plate that similar to a KAC one and I’ve staked it to the nut.

Do either the KAC or DD end-plate mounts allow the stock to close fully?

Mine is the older DD end plate and doesn’t, their newer one does. The new ones are thinner.

Thanks; good to know.

Aubrey - dropped you a PM re: the Knight QD Mount Plate.

Not sure about other stocks, but a Magpul CTR will collapse all of the way. Plus, the geometry is consistent as well between the reciever, mount and CTR. It looks pretty slick.

Robb…

I think I know the answer to this because of all the inputs on staking, but…

I have never staked my VLTOR stock Castle Nut to mate with the reciver plate, and it’s not loosened one bit in over 6,000 rounds. Is this a preventitive Medicine thing, or something that is seriously advocated, and necessary?

Thanks for your reply,

Tack

By staking the castle nut, you are simply trying to head off an issue in the future. Your castle nut may NEVER come loose, then again it might. Why chance it??

It is particularly important when using a GG&G-type single point sling plate. The one on my oldest daughter’s carbine came loose and the plate rotated inboard at about 4500 rounds, ejecting the detent spring and preventing the charging handle from retracting. Picture now graces the pages of Pat’s book.

Thanks for the Info. guys.

Pat has a book? Is it in print where it can be purchased? Seriously?

Tack

Its a book he keeps of all the broken parts that happen in his training classes.
