Carbine Gas Question

Brain farting…
Would increasing the thickness of the gas tube under the handguards help equalize pressure and remedy the over-gassing issue?
Im thinking if this is were a viable solution, they could make barrel-length-specific thicknesses to provide carbine gas systems with middy or even rifle type pressure conditions.

Increasing the wall thickness of the gas tube will do nothing more than stiffen the gas tube and increase the outside diameter of the tube.

Increasing the volume of the interior of the gas tube, as the “Pig Tail” gas tube does, is said to lesson the impulse of gas as the weapon is fired.

he probably meant increasing the size of the internal diameter and volume. Pigtails seem like a nice bandaid but bends and curves in a gas tube dont sit well with me, places for stuff to accumulate IMO. Yea $80 for a pigtail tube, no thanks.

I’m not recommending the purchase of a “Pig Tail” gas tube, simply using it as an example in support of my response.

Increasing the volume of the interior of the gas tube would fall under Boyle’s Law which states:

“For a fixed amount of gas kept at a fixed temperature, P [pressure] and V [volume] are inversely proportional (while one increases, the other decreases).”

I’ve heard of expansion chambers being used in short gas systems. I don’t see the need for any such nonsense as long as you’re running at least an 11.5" barrel.

Don’t need another non standard part. I think the M16 bolt carriers, H buffers and proper springs available makes the CAR gas nicer. You can run 14.5" bbl to lessen dwell time. Then there’s mid-length gas systems. Combine all 3 and I think you’ve tamed it. This is new to me too and am but a day or two from beginning to run a BCM 14.5" middy thru it’s paces. Only thing missing is an H buffer but I’ll get one soon.

Ya the pigtails dont appeal to me either. This came to mind while thinking about people’s current shift towards the middy system. I figured this would be a fix for those with barrel lengths that require carbine systems. I did think it would be complicated though since what I had in mind was to take the volume of gas on a 16 middy or even a rifle and accordingly expand the tube to replicate said pressures per corresponding barrel length–having a specific gas tube size per barrel length.
Anyway, thanks guys!
