I recently bought some A5 stuff to put on my lower (BCM intermediate RE, BCM QD endplate, Springco Green, A5H4), and I had a quick question. When I install the intermediate tube, would I need to use the additional end plate I bought, or will the existing endplate be reusable? If it’s reusable, will there be a loss of strength?
Not sure if it’s relevant to the question, but it’s a BCM lower, so it has their characteristic heavy staking in two spots. I’d prefer to reuse the original endplate and put the extra one I bought on my recent CA pistol build, but I’m not so frugal that I’ll sacrifice reliability in my main rifle by reusing a compromised $20 part.
If you restake it, you have no issues using the same one, aside from whatever visually happened with removal or installation. From a functional point of view, staking is staking in this case.
After disassembling my lower to have it engraved, I am putting it back together with the same parts. I am planning to make sure when I tighten the castle nut it lines up slightly off from the previous staking.
When removing the original staking did not break off but was pushed back up and out of the way. I will use a different spot, that way I know I’m not reusing a potentially compromised piece of the metal.
True, the spec is 38-40 ft lbs, so I’ve got plenty of wiggle room to ensure it doesn’t line up with the old staking spots. Might touch up the old spots just to make sure they don’t rust, being steel and all.
More than likely it wont stop in the same location with a new RE - at least the two rifles I’ve switched to A5 didn’t, so I just file down the old portion so it can sit flush and staked on of the other locations.
