Can anyone figure out why LMT changed the MWS carrier?

The carrier that shipped with the first batch of rifles has been changed to a bolt carrier that looks more like a semi auto ar15 carrier with some strange grooves. It also looks like it has a different (maybe nickel-boron) coating. There are some pics on TOS. Let me know what you think…

Vague observation is vague.

Post the photos and you’ll probably get a better answer.

sorry im away on business and can only use my iphone…here are the pics

Interesting. The front of it looks like the Enhanced carrier, and the slotting on the underside almost appears that they opened it up to allow AR15 triggers instead of the narrower SR25 hammer only. The finish does look more NP3ish instead of hard chrome as well.

ETA: the relief on the underside of the firing pin area looks to me like they were trying to relieve upward pressure from the rounds in the magazine on the underside of the carrier.

The front grooves are obviously to reduce rounds in the magazine friction on forward motion. The enhancements to the rear look like intended to reduce carrier tilt, like on a piston gun. Not sure why on a DI gun, but maybe a piston is coming for the MWS.

As noted, the hammer notch is widened to accomodate a larger variety of triggers.

Here is what happens in an ArmaLite AR-10 carrier:

so, which carrier would one want?

:confused::confused::confused:

I’d opt for the enhanced one with the wider trigger notch, anti-tilt features, and grooves.

like always as soon as I buy something they come out with a new cool update.

My luck as well…

Cept’ the love of my life… no better updated model than her…

Well I guess i’m glad that I am still waiting…never mind still not happy.

Bump for all the people that are PMing me asking me about it

That would certainly be interesting to see.

Looks lightened up a bit, like an original AR10 carrier. Lower mass.

I just wish LMT would send me a gun even if it had the old carrier:( Mary Jo said mine would ship in 2-3 weeks and it is almost 3 ship

lucky me…I was bitching about having the old carrier on ar15.com and i got an offer to switch.

the new carrier came in today. yah!

I asked LMT when the new carrier would be available for sale as a part, and the answer was “when rifle backlog is caught up, guessing about 6 months or so.” I kinda figured that would be the answer.

On the new BCGs, the new cuts help improve feeding even though no problem existed in this dept. prior to the design change…The primary reason for changing this small thing was for the Civilian market and these newer bcgs with bigger cuts in bottom is done so that they can accept a variety of the diff. trigger units that exist to the Civilian market like Geissele and Timney…basically LMT did this because they want folks like us to have the ability to run any trigger we want vs. not doing this because of a flaw or reliability issue in org. bcgs…as the MoD guns are all old styled bcgs.

That should sum up this thread’s question:)

i also like tye new less reflective coating.

I just bought mine and don’t know what it will come with yet. Does anyone know if LMT is switching them out for the new one if you ask?

You’ll get the new carrier; I would bet my next paycheck that all rifles with the old carrier have long been sold. I am sure they will not switch it out if not. The new carriers will not be available as an individual part for a while, only after production of the rifle has been caught up. Same story for the 5R 1:11.25 barrel.
