Don’t laugh as i am new to this…lol
But are all AR parts of the same caliber compatible with each other no matter what the brand? I have an M&P15 and am interested in building another from the ground up for the first time. Any suggestions?

No. There are milspec and commercial size buffer tubes.
Barrels are different diameter that will take different front sight bases.
etc…
indeed… there are some variances to specs- but for the most part, two parts built to the same spec from different manufacturers should be pretty much “drop in.” you just need to be aware of things like mentioned above. fortunately, there’s not too many of them.
This is correct, but for the most part I think what the OP is asking is whether a part from let’s say a Colt would be interchangeable with a part from a Stag or something along those lines.
For the most part the answer is yes, but there can be exceptions. When you say build from the ground up, does this mean you wouldn’t consider buying and upper and a lower and then adding what’s needed?

Depends I guess, I just wanna build an AR with the best parts available.
Thank you guys for the answers
Then I suggest you purchase a complete lower and a complete upper from reputable manufactures and go from there. There are many here to choose from, just do a little reading up. You may still need hand guards or rear sights, depending on who you buy from and what you buy.
However this way you build the gun but aren’t bogged down worrying about getting all the many parts needed to build completely from scratch. By far the better way to go IMHO, especially for someone fairly new to the platform.
