Does anyone have any experience with the Galil clone from Century Arms? I’ve been looking at one for a little while now but I’ve heard they can be hit or miss.
Search is your friend.
Quality IS hit or miss. If you can afford to have $600-$700 tied up in a rifle that may need to be sent back multiple times and the design really appeals to you, I guess you could go for it.
Me? My money’s hard to come by, and I hate the Galil stock anyway, so I skipped it.
Thanks
From what I gather the recent production models are decent with a couple of relatively simple corrections.
Generally, replacing the extractor and extractor spring and polishing the chamber should take care of things. If not, you probably have more serious problems, like a soft receiver, improperly torqued barrel, improperly chambfered chamber, or bad headspace.
The thing to realize, one way or the other, is that most of the parts are from worn-out Guatemalan surplus kits. And the rest of the parts are US-made, some of them modified to work in the Galil, like the Tapco G2 trigger.
I have one and it has been a bit of a project to get it where it ought to be. I got mine at cost. And trying to get it close to the quality of a brand new IMI weapon… well, I’ll have spent nearly as much on this gun as I would have if I had just bought a pre-ban model outright. And I have a fair idea of what I need to do, so there haven’t been any gunsmith charges. Of course, when I get done, I’ll have one that is nothing like anything ever offered by the factory, so…
Anyway. If you don’t mind spending the time and the money (I would strongly recommend someone like Red Jacket or another top-shelf AK-guru) or you’re just looking at a new range toy, go ahead and buy one. But you’re probably better off just getting the real deal.
My advice is to wave off of them.
They literally are a crap shoot.
As stated above, the mil spec parts are from beat to shit Guat surplus, with a US commercial grade barrel (non chromed 1/9" twist .223 chamber), receiver (definitely avoid the ORF receivers), and fire control groups.
Just not worth the aggravation and soul crushing disappointment.
If you can save enough shekels, try to find a pre ban Action Arms and grab it. Nothing else really compares.
Does the OP intend to use this prospective rifle as a high volume toy/weapon?
If so, I don’t see the point in spending massive $$$$ for a collector grade IMI.
Turbothis on the akforum was doing rewelds of the cut receivers that apex has, but you will still need a parts kit…
I would stay away from century arms anything bro.
There are alot out there for 500 to 700.00 and quality is hit or miss with CIA so be very careful. On the other hand if you spend a couple more bucks a good smith can fix it.
Dude doesn’t even headspace his builds. I’d stay far the hell away from anything he does.
Thanks for all the advice guys I think I’ll just save a few more pennies and get an Arsenal SLR
