buy a 2009 S&W VTAC rifle? or wait for 2010 model?

I don’t think the 2010s are out yet, but I can find the 2009s.

Does anyone with more insight know if there is a good reason to wait for a 2010? (or just go get a 2009 because they exist now, and looks like for around $1500 (gunbroker plus FFL fees …)

—EDIT, much back and forth has shown there are no released written specs for the 2010 yet, just shotshow video.

I see this is your first post here. Just curious, are you dead set on buying a S&W rifle? S&W makes okay rifles, and likely it will be just fine for your purposes. However, they don’t use the best in materials, they are not military spec, and they don’t utilize the level of durability quality controls that other companies such as Colt, BCM, LMT, Noveske, and DD do. S&W also uses a 1:9" barrel twist :frowning:

Here’s a link to the general knowledge base:

Here’s the AR-15 comparison chart. The further left you go on the chart, the more military spec you get. Military spec is 60 years of battlefield testing and refinement of the design according to the TDP(technical data package). Anything less is a toss-up as to whether it’ll work or not:

again back to the question, are there any significant reasons to wait for the 2010 VTAC rifle, instead of getting the 2009

—You listed data for a completely different rifle than the one I was refering to. VTACs have a 1:7 twist.

I say wait for the new version to come out. If I were in the market for a complete new rifle the new S&W Vtac would be the route I would go.

The new verson will have 4150 chrome lined, 1/8 twist, mid length barrel, fluted in-front of the gas block. It will also have the new Vtac/Troy 13" “Extreme BattleRail”.

The S&W rep I spoke with last week said it will be released in July or August.

Also, the new Smith M&P 15TS is coming with a 1/7 twist along with a TRX battle rail. It may be worth checking out too. I say wait for the 2010 VTAC but who knows when that will be.

PS-Carolina issued their Troopers nearly 400 M&P rifles without a issue to date. I think they are more than adequate for duty.

Are you hesitating between the VTAC and their not yet released 2010 TS? If so I would wait, the new M&P15 TS looks like a very interesting piece IMHO.
If you are just after the 2009 VTAC versus 2010 I do not know of any changes to it so you might want to give S&W a call (they are good for that).

FWIW both the M&P 15 VTAC and the new TS have a 1/7 twist. The M&P15 might not be at the top of the chart but it’s no slouch either, it all depends what the OP is looking for and at what price. On a side note S&W customer service has always been first grade (at least to me) while the same cannot be said about Colt.

The S&W VTAC uses a 1:7.

The new VTAC will have a fluted 1:8 barrel. I’m really hoping that they’re going to offer these as uppers only, I really like the new specs.

Anyone have a picture of this new 2010 VTAC?

I have no idea where people are getting this 1:8 nonsense

Oh, I dont know… maybe directly from the manufacturer or sumptin???

ONCE AGAIN, HERE’S THE VIDEO LINK FOR REFERENCE!!! LET’S SEE IF WE CAN GET THIS CLEARED UP FOR EVERYONE… PAY ATTENTION AT THE 0.23 POINT OF THE VIDEO, : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjl95D0VsjQ

I don’t really understand the S&W M&P15 VTAC. When I first saw it I thought it was a great idea, a more budget friendly alternative to the JP Enterprises VTAC. However… It actually costs more.

On yet another another note, you can even get a Noveske Recce with the lighter Troy VTAC handguard for less than the S&W.

THE NEW 2010 S&W VTAC WILL ALSO HAVE THE LIGHTER TROY/VTAC TRX EXTREME BATTLE RAIL.

If it’s still more expensive than a Noveske I’m not sure that is enough to switch the scale.

Got link?

I saw the new TS has the Troy but nothing with regards to the new VTAC, got link to the new VTAC specs?

Reading is fundamental.

The YouTube video above is the only thing I’ve seen so far for information. S&W hasn’t put it on their site yet.

Thanks, can’t get youtube from here, I’ll watch it when I get home then
