Bushmaster 308.... Dad bought it, I wanna change it....

So my dad, without taking my advice, bought a Bushmaster ORC 308, one of the new mid length gas system ones. I gotta admit, it’s pretty accurate but I don’t trust the reliability of it. His guns are all shot off a bench rest, and just shooting to have fun, so it shouldn’t be a huge issue.

Well, he’s wanting a 18in stainless barrel for it, and I honestly don’t know where to tell I’m to look one who’s parts will fit what.

I’d like to get him a BCG that’s not bushmaster/dpms as well.

Any suggestions on where I should look? Heard good things about JP Rifles.

Or a Rock or a bartelein barrel. You can get either barrel extension on any barrel you like. I called GAPrecision and they quoted me $800 for a rock 308 cut to 18" and with a barrel extension of my choosing

Excellent, I’ll go the Rock route as I know they have excellent accuracy.

Cool! Post pics when you’re done. I went Noveske instead since it was only $500 and I put it in a ma ten and could go with either barrel extension

The .308 ORC are without a doubt the best deal in 308 AR’s right now. They are basically DPMS .308 with CL barrel/middy gas and threaded barrel. You can still get them for $800 brand new. I will post after I get my next one in Jan.

I wouldnt change the barrel. There is no point. a 16" .308 will get you to 1000 yards supersonic. If you trying to shoot tiny holes at distance, you bought the wrong rifle for that. They use DPMS/SR25 pattern barrels and parts. Troy now makes a rail that you can use monoliticaly now beacuse these use a shorter reciver height then the older DPMS ones.

where are they still $800? assuming that would be for the old style DMPS receiver height, right? I thought those were long gone. Anyhow, for that price, you could fix a lot of problems and still be into it for cheap, including the Troy rail.

Its the lower rail hight. The place I’m looking still cant get any from their dist (sportsmans). I am leaning towards a CMMG MK3 right now. They are running $1200 and come with a 1/11 SS barrel, 2 stage trigger, billet upper and lower, ff system and a mil spec RE. You can get them in OD, FDE or Black as well.

Those do look like attractive specs. If QC and CS were assuredly excellent, I’d dive in. Is that also the KAC/DPMS type?

Yep. Uses PMAGS as well. CMMG has pretty good customer service. I have heard really good reports of these in the 18" with the PRS stock. I am looking at the 16", throwing a SOMPOD/DYNACOMP/1-4 on it.

The mil-spec carbine receiver extension is to short for a .308 to function 100% reliably and uses a short proprietary buffer like the DPMS and Bushmaster carbines.

IF you are going to use an adjustable carbine stock the only way to go is with an Armalite AR10 carbine length receiver extension. The Vltor 10A5SR receiver extension, like the Armalite, is 3/4 inch longer than a mil-spec carbine receiver extension and uses a standard carbine length buffer, longer Armalite AR10 recoil spring and can use any mil-spec carbine stock.

jwfuhrman, Before changing the barrel on the ORC, I would put in a good trigger. The barrels are 4150cmv and chrome lined with a medium heavy profile. Mine is very accurate. I would also suggest a free float tube if you are looking for the best accuracy. Those two changes will get you closer to where you need to be for small groups, if you are still not satisfied, then you can get the barrel of choice.

My thinking was like yours but after much research I realized the DPMS 308 bolt and carrier, that Bushmaster uses, is actually very good. Fulton Armory uses the same bolt, bolt carrier and receivers as Bushmaster and DPMS.

If you have any function issues change the receiver extension per my last post.

Good luck with the ORC.

I recently picked up an MOE Mid-length and I like having a 1-10" twist barrel too.
