back story: did my first tactical rifle comp last year with my sbr, eotech, can (yes it was a bit front heavy). after doing it i relized i needed magification for the long shots. so i started putting together the 18" rifle.
my dilima now is i kinda want to use my sbr with the razor to save a bit on weight. the longest shot last year was shooting 5 12" plates @ 100 yrd. i almost think i can shoot it with my reddot also.
I would run the SBR with EO ,no suppressor, remove UBR and install the VLTOR.
12" @ 100 is easily doable. Zero at 50, lay dot dead on and send it.
What set up will you be shooting at? Multiple steels? Engage more than once?
I don’t know where you live, as I suppose that could impact this. But the low power variables are the bee’s knees for 3-gun. If your match is only shooting to 100…go find one that isn’t filled with hoser stages and have fun stretching it out. I’d be bored with that.
Within two hours there are at least three monthly 3-gun matches, within three hours that number goes up dramatically for me. One of the ones that I shoot here is pure steel and probably half of the rifle targets are between 250-400. The difference is split between poppers around 40-50, and some stuff out to 550. Humbling…and also the reason I got into 3-gun.
I’m just saying that I bet your close in splits won’t benefit much at all from going to the red dot, certainly not enough to seriously impact your standings at the end, but the magnification can be key and save your butt. If you want more distance, talk to the match directors…these dudes aren’t getting paid and are likely happy to get some feedback.
I have the eo@50 now. There are 5 plates and I have to shoot the plates one each, in 3 different positions. The lower also has the hiperfire trigger, should I switch that too you think.
At some point you need to just shoot it…a bunch. And the changes you want to make will become obvious to you, without all the heartache of buying a bunch of crap or swapping parts incessantly. It’s a nice upper and a great optic. Nobody will look at you funny or anything.
What’s right for competitor A, might not be right for you. But experience will tell you exactly what’s right…and by the looks of it you have a setup that will allow you to grow for a long time before a problem arises.
Yeah, the other stages are pretty much around 30-40 yrds. That was last year, this year he might have I’d shooting out to 550. The range is more then capable to handle distances.
No experience with the Hyperfire but I would yank it (one with over complicated spring set up right?)
I always take back up guns incase my main goes down for whatever reason. Take both your rifles and choose which to use based on match description at briefing. If it’s a short range match I would run the SBR with no suppressor and the VLTOR. If match had some yardage I would run the 18 incher. Of course if there was one 500 yard stage and the other 4 or 5 stages were CQB I would just take the possibilty of FTN’s on the 500 with the SBR. Then try to make up penalty time on the CQB’s where everyone else is swinging 18-20 barrels.
When I used to do three gun, there were three cqb and one long range. If you dominated the long range, and buggered up the short, you were still ahead of anyone that did the opposite. Esp if you time out AND don’t hit some of the targets at all.
That said, at 100 yards I think if you’re proficient with both, you can flip a coin. And do fine.
I’m definitely take both and go from there I guess, but do y’all think I should put the razor on the sbr? I can shoot that both eyes open on 1 for sure.
Honestly, it’s not like I’m gonna shoot 1 in A zone and leave, I’ll tap it twice regardless.
I’d leave it set up the way you have the new upper, but that’s just me. Maybe add offset irons for anything close.
Don’t know your local game rules but a magnified optic will probably put you in ‘open’ class. If you don’t plan on using any other open class options (extended mags, coupled mags, bipod, etc) I would stick with EO for 200 yards and less stuff. Now if you want a 14 lb rifle by all means run the magnified optic, offset irons, suppressor, coupled mags, bipod and UBR.
I personally enjoy the ‘Tactical’ or ‘Non-magnified optic’ class. Run 30 round mags (sometimes 20’s), BUIS and a PRO. I like running a SBR and keeping it nimbly bimbly. I go to have fun so keep that in mind. Maybe throw in an unneeded belly slide between empty and an emergency reload. Get the old guys giggling. But, what works for me or what I enjoy may not be for you. Run both guns, set up as you like, and see what works for you.
I agree with the above statement that if you only have one ‘long’ range stage and you blow it completely there is no making up 15 FTN’s.
The local place I used to go to still put magnified optics in tac op. Only if you had a second offset like t1 did it put you in open.
Although the let you run 1x optics in irons class so maybe that’s different from most.
That’s the most common in my experience.

Nice guns!
I’d run the vortex on the longer rifle for 3 gun…leave the red dot on your sbr.
I’ve been using my acog on my DD m4v7 for 3 gun and it did not put me into open. Once an rmr goes on it will though. I have also never been in any stage that was so tight that I wished I was using anything shorter.
Once I started using my glock with rmr, I was put into open but I just go for fun so I don’t really care. I’m building an AR Pistol now and going with just an RMR for closer range and faster shooting. This is obviously all just my opinion but the magnification seems better suited on the longer rifle as it will be more accurate at those longer ranges and can be dialed back and used as a red dot for the closer work.
I’m going definitely for fun, but I kinda see it as equipment testing.
That’s why I don’t care which class I’m in…
