So I’m wanting an AR in 762 this year or early next…
I can’t decide on 14.5 or 16"?
This will be mostly for target shooting paper and steel @ 200-300 yards… That is longest shot at my current range, but I’m hoping to find or buy some land to get out to maybe 600…
Do I really lose much velocity or anything with the slightly shorter barrel?
By the time you go 16" or less with a 7.62x51, it’s velocity drops to being close to what you’d get with a 300 BLK or 7.62x39. My experience has been that the 7.62x51 has ferocious muzzle blast with barrels 16" or less.
I haven’t run it over a chrono, but I’m very satisfied with the performance of my Para FAL with an 18" barrel & BABC
Unless you’re going to run it suppressed full time, 16" would be my advice too. Still really loud anywhere enclosed, but that’s pretty much the break even point, any shorter than those and a BLK setup is giving you comparable muzzle energy in the same size package, with much cheaper rounds.
i have been kicking around the idea of a 14.5 .308 as well. with appropriate ammo you still have a pretty effective shortish riffle, no? a 155gr amax expands down to something like 1650fps. you cant squeeze 2500fps -2600 out of a 14.5" barrel with 155gr pills and lighter? 2500fps to 1650fps seems like a pretty generous amount of velocity to work with right?
with a lighter projectile (150 accubond, 155gr amax, barnes 130gr sbr, any tsx or ttsx under 165gr, and also the 130 gr mk319) you could have a short .308 that behaves more like a .308 and less like a 300blk. am i off base here?
