So When I first posted this I was going to buy a whole AR-15 and now that I have done some chatting on here I have decided to build one.
Any suggestions on brands a whatnot are welcome as I have never done this before!
I am getting ready to get my first AR-15 and I’m looking for some input. The gun dealer that I have been going to for a while is pointing me to a CMMG M4 LE. I am looking for something that will be a good starting platform that I can build on as I don’t have a lot of money to spend right now. It is just going to be for plinking and fun, I am not going to be in shooting competitions or anything like that.
What have you all heard about the CMMG? Do you think I should go a different route?
I was also thinking about buying the gun part by part. If so what do you suggest if I went that route?
This isn’t my thread… but the guy who started it said, “It is just going to be for plinking and fun, I am not going to be in shooting competitions or anything like that.”
I would suggest saving up a little while longer and buying a better made AR. I don’t know how old you are but this purchase could potentially last you many years and it’s better to buy quality initially than have to dick with a lot of things in the future. Pay once or pay twice.
Take a look at the chart Rob made and read through the definitions and also the different tabs to better educate yourself on what’s considered important when looking at an AR purchase. Best of luck! https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA#gid=2
Sounds good, though we might like to stay closer to $900 if at all possible. Last question, are you in a restricted state such as CA, NY or NJ? This is a relevant question I assure you.
Oregon, nice if your a hippie in Portland, j/k. My parents are in Portland. As far as places to purchase, Lewiston, Id has some reputable dealers here that you can purchase some items from. But the best bet is online and have it transferred to your own dealer. Sad thing is, unless you have local dealers that are more interested in the equipment and customer, versus making a sale you will get bad advice and sold a sub par rifle. I would go through BCM, G&R tactical for your needs, or Noveske if you save some more coin.
As a tenured member here, my instinct tell me to agree with Irishluck and suggest that you save up an additional $100-$200 to acquire a gun that will offer extreme dependability. This despite your implication that the gun is for range purposes only.
Why, you ask? Because it will probably wind up propped against your bedpost at night as well. Just do it right the first time. Then you can contact a great fellow here named Grant at G&R Tactical (see dealer forum) who will take superb care of you on an individual level.
If that isn’t an option, then for $900 I would suggest Bushmaster. Grant might want to smack me, but the two I have owned were very good to me over the years.
Don’t settle for lower tier. You can still get a top tier for $900, if you are patient, shop the classified ads, and know how to bargain. Don’t be afraid to buy used either, lots of “barely used” and “like new” uppers out there, and you can add a new lower for ~$350. Sometimes you can get lucky, and find a NIB complete from a private seller who needs $$$. I recently purchased a Colt LE6920, still in the plastic bag, for $900. If you decide to NOT go top tier, and want the CMMG, then get on their bargain basement rifles for $600. At least you will save some money, and when you are ready to step up, you should be able to get most of your investment back.
