Well, I think I am going to give this a try. I have always wanted an SBR but they are not legal here, so I think I am going to build a pistol. I am not too worried about the actual building part as I am a skilled mechanic so the building part should come easy to me
Here is my first question. So, I am going to buy a stripped lower, and I know on the form they will have to mark it as receiver. I am assuming after that I just have to register it with the police once I build the receiver into pistol form? I do not have to do anything on the federal level as far as paperwork goes right?
What is the prefered pistol receiver extension for most of you?
I will most likely just buy a quality prebuilt upper because the savings in building just really is not there. That being said, I have changed barrels on an ar before so if I decide to build the upper myself once again I think it is something I can handle. My main concern in this area is barrel length. I have heard not to go under 10.5", but I have also heard a lot of people who recomend the 11.5" over the 10. Is there that much more reliability risk with a 10.5. I want to make this as short and light as possible because that is the whole point.
Best way to do this is:
Have a stripped AR lower registered as a pistol at your local FFL, they can do this. If they “don’t know” go somewhere else. Keep the pistol registration card with the gun past the 30 day mark in case you were ever hassled by misinformed LEO’s.
The great loop-hole with the MI laws is that once you have a CPL along with your registered AR pistol, it can be kept loaded in the vehicle (all pistol laws apply).
Using a lower marked “Pistol” is the best way to go, but not a deal breaker.
If you have a CPL in MI it can be done easier, but otherwise you must start at your local PD or Sheriff Dept. to pick up a purchase permit same as if you were buying any pistol.

Mine has the ACE but the Spikes (and I don’t like the company) is nicer. I keep hearing two different stories about taping foam over a standard receiver extension; some say it’s legal, some say not.
I didn’t want to fuck with the legality of a standard RE tube. When MI legalizes SBR’s I’ll be dumping my pistol lower in my spare parts box.

I do have a cpl. So if I get my hands on a virgin stripped receiver, can I just fill out my cpl purchase form (forget the name for it) and send it in and I am good.
I might try to get a pistol marked, but it is a lot easier to come by an unmarked one.
Correct. Just find an FFL with the stripped lower in stock and register it like you would any other pistol. Then you mail or bring in the pistol purchase permits back to your local LE department.
It’s easy. Then buy your “pistol upper” off the internet along with all the other parts.
If you are familiar with the GR area, Silver Bullet Firearms does this all the time for people.
Any stripped lower you were to buy today is transferred as an other and can be built into a rifle or a pistol.
Once you build it up, since you have a MI CPL just fill out the RI-60 form with yourself as the buyer and seller and mail it off.
Just remember once a rifle always a rifle, a pistol may go back and forth depending on config, although some will argue that this only applies to Thompson Center Contender units.
I have really been rethinking this. I want a short barrel, but I guess for now I do not think loosing a buttstock is worth the gain in loosing-4-5 inches off the barrel. I think I might just get KISS carbine and keep it as light and handy as possible to back up my DD
