I am in need of some assistance here.
I have an existing DPMS AP4 and while it has gotten me trough Patrol Rifle school and a few other rifle courses, I just dont have ultimate faith in it.
I have elected to build off of the lower and make a better patrol rifle. I am gonna dump the existing upper and BCG and replace all of it. Now here is the kicker: I need to do it for around 500.00. You see I work at a small department that doesnt pay all that much and I am really on tight budgets.
I am looking for suggestions on who to look at. I have “THE CHART” saved to my desktop and I am leaning towards BCM or CMMG…BCM looks like the best Idea for the least money. any ideas?
CMMG??
I’d watch for sales and the EE for BCM or DD parts myself for a patrol carbine. Good luck man, I feel your pain…
look at this:

I had the same dilemma about a year ago. I sold off my AP4 upper and added a BCM upper with BCG. With BCM’s sales you should be able to get it all for around 500. After I put the new BCM upper on my DPMS lower I went and took an armorer’s course for LE and everything was in spec and approved. You can’t go wrong with a BCM upper as many on this site has mentioned.
edit If you get a standard carbine or mid-length with BCG it should run you 520 before shipping.
BCM or CMMG? That’s like Caddilac or Daewoo. The BCM wont let you down, and is barely over 500 for a complete upper with their summer sale.
Deffinately check out the equipment exchange on this forum for smoking deals on uppers. There are always several BCM uppers for sale, and usually at good prices.
BCMs are hard to pass up at current prices.
As stated, pretty close to $500 for a complete upper.
not a popular decision here but a Spikes complete upper would come in at that price AND includes their heav(ier) buffer, which will do a lot for reliability on a carbine length gas system.
it’s been cussed and discussed but I think the bottom line is it’s good to go. if it weren’t a carbine length I would already have one…
Sell the existing upper on arfcom or gunbroker to offset the price of the new upper if possible.
Here we go again…
To the OP. This issue has been beat to death on this forum. I encourage you to look around and do some reading.
Recently a friend contacted me because he had an Armalite M15A2 musket. He wanted a more compact reliable weapon. I stripped the Armalite down and assisted him in selling everything but the lower receiver. I was able to sell it and he ended up spending about 100.00 out of his pocket to get a good M4 upper and buttstock assembly. I did all the work for free.
It is entirely possible to offset the cost, but you will probably have to part with the weapon until you can make it happen. Or you can buy it and then sell it. It’s up to you.
Daniel Defense or BCM are probably your best options and if you shop around you’ll find what you need.
14.5’’ LW Midlength.
Upper + Barrel = $385
Add BCG = $135
Total = Around $520
The best upper they sell, IMO.

Put the upper up for sale ASAP sell it and order your BCM upper you will have the upper in a few days. BCM ships very quickly.
Yes, sell the DPMS upper cheap, and buy a BCM upper. The lower is all stuff you can play with as you get more funding, but the upper is what really needs to be dialed tight, ESPECIALLY as a duty weapon.
A BCM Middy (or LW Middy) with a MOE handguard gives you a solid platform, and you can push your light out far enough to prevent most shadowing off the barrel (depending on your light choice).
Yep and it stops here.
