Thought I’d attach a few pictures of the nearly completed project. I ordered an AAC Blackout 51T muzzle brake, but it hasn’t appeared yet. I’ll be putting it in a Pelican 1750, also inbound. One of these days it will sport an AAC 762SD.
Good looking rifle! I picked mine up this morning and am having the same questions as you. I want to put a Leupold 4x12x50 on it. Where did you get your bi-pod and what sling are you going to run?
Thanks! Got the bipod from Amazon for $97 (free shipping).
I have a sling but the bipod uses the front stud. Supposedly there is a sling adapter for this bipod, but I haven’t found it. There was also a suggestion to use a side mount sling attachment, but again, haven’t found that either.
I installed the AAC Blackout this evening. Kind of a pain trying to clock that thing with the shims, but I finally got it within a degree or two and Rocksett it. Looks pretty good. Now to save for the can…
The silencer is the worse part, I sent my form 4 out a week ago and already are wanting it approved!!! I got the AAC 762sdn6. Which one are you looking at?
Yes, this will be my first can purchase. I need to sell some photo gear to keep it on the “wife friendly” side of things.
I am going with the AAC 762SD. It’s a bit quieter on the .308 and $200 cheaper. I will also get a 51T adapter for my M4, but I really am more interested in hushing the bolt gun.
Well you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men…
I had 2 new rifles to sight in today and really needed to get to the range. My Dad however presented me with a very early birthday present: a Browning Citori Sporter Ultra that he just restocked in a gorgeous burled walnut just for me. We had to shoot some skeet first!
(Ignore the Beretta case…)
After that we told the guys at the skeet range that we were off to the rifle range. “Oh no you’re not, we’re working on it right now. There’s a bulldozer right in the middle if it. Maybe next month?”
Damn!!!
We ended up swiping a target board and driving back home, grabbed some tools and drove to the back field so I could sight in the M4 and the 700 AAC-SD. I measured out 25 meters using a 5 foot broomstick and got the M4 and its ACOG looking good after a few minutes.
We were running short on time but I really wanted to get the 700 at least close. I quickly found a safe lane for a 100 meter shot and moved the target board. I got prone on the bipod with a bag on the stock and roughly bore sighted. Shot #1 was on the paper, but 8 inches high. The phone rang. The girls were hungry and pissed off. Damn! Gotta hurry. Shot #2 was 4" high, but windage was within 1/2 MOA. One more! Shot #3 was a bullseye. I ran to change the target, ran back and with a pounding heart sent four more before tossing everything in the truck and racing home.
Best part of the story: the ammo was 1979 Spanish NATO surplus!
I WISH! My car (9 year old Impreza 2.5RS) does have a naturally-aspirated, boxer engine, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end with the Porsche.
If you decide to change the stock, go all the way and get a McMillan or Manners with Badger Ordnance detachable magazine bottom metal. Getting something like a Bell & Carlson or a HS-Precision take-off from a PSS or LTR doesn’t get you much further than the original Hogue.
In the meantime, get a Eagle Stock Pack to raise the comb on the Hogue. I added one layer of trimmed mouse pad using self adhesive Velcro strips onto the stock, then wrapped it with an Eagle Stock Pack. Cheek weld is FAR better than a bare stock.
8200rpm: Shake brother! I’m a Subaru guy myself. I’m in a 2007 STi right now (300WHP/355WTQ) and before that had a 2003 WRX.
sabresbrs: The Blackout I put on is AAC #100185 and is a muzzle brake. It uses the 51T mounting system. In the past year or so they have changed their 762SD (and maybe others) to use this newer mount instead of the 18T. The new, compact 762-SND-6 also uses the 51T mount.
Some areas of confusion that I dealt with in making the purchase were:
Price: Don’t bother shopping. They retail for $150 and the best prices out there are in the $140-145 range if you can find one in stock.
Shimming: A guy at AAC told me that the Blackout 51T did not require it, but the directions that accompany it definitely say to. It comes with a shim pack that has .008, .010, .012, .015, .020 and .030 shims. The openings in the brake must end up at or very near 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. It takes a while to get this right.
Torque: The spec is 20-30 ft-lb and you have to do it with wrench flats (3/4" wrench). That means a crow’s foot (and the torque conversion due to its extra lever arm length) or a fish scale on the wrench like I did it.
Adhesive: It comes with a single use tube of Rocksett. The threads must be completely free of lubricant for it to stick. I cleaned liberally with acetone. It needs to set up for 24 hours after application.
Abtomat, I shot my aac-sd for the first time today and loved it!
I have the Leupold 4x12x50 scope with Leupold high rings. I basically copied you and got the AAC muzzle break and Harris bipod just like yours and 200 rounds of Federal Gold Medal Match 168s…I cannot wait for my can to be approved!
Sabresbrs - Sweet! I was impressed, too. I think that brake takes some recoil away. It was very comfortable to shoot. I am looking forward to a can, too.
8200rpm - Different strokes. I like it and will be flying with it. Pelican makes good stuff. (I think I could kill a puma with this one.)
