Buffer Tube Wiggle?

Before the receiver end-plate and castle nut are completely torqued and staked…How much wiggle in the tube/stock do you guys think is normal?

I’m putting together two lowers using Vltor A5 receiver tubes, and Noveske receiver plates, and on one of the lowers, it seems that the little nub on the receiver plate is able to wiggle from side to side in the buffer tube channel about twice as much as the other lower. It’s almost like the channel on the buffer tube (pointed to below) is wider than the one on my other lower.

Is that something to be concerned about…or will this completely go away once everything is torqued down and staked? I just never remember a stock being able to twist side-to-side so much even when not tightened down.

Note, there is no play between the end-plate and the receiver when fitted together…just between the end-plate and the tube. Same result with two other end-plates

How tight/loose is it when tightened down? It does sound like lower may be a little out of spec, but if problem goes away after tightened-no worries.

I had some on my setup - ended up having a buddy split the difference and hold the lower “in the middle” of the wiggle area while I tightened down the castle nut using a torque wrench with the RE firmly held in delrin blocks in a bench mounted vise. Ended perfectly straight, hope this helps.

To clarify a little better, it’s nothing to do with the actual receiver or how the buffer tube screws into the receiver…that interface is all good. All the seemingly excess movement is coming from how the receiver plate nub interfaces with the smooth channel that runs through the threads on the underside of the buffer tube. Seems like the channel through the buffer tube threads is too wide, or the nub on the receiver plate is to thin…or a combination of both. This allows what I feel is more than normal movement when holding the receiver in one hand, butt-stock in the other hand, and twisting.

I guess it’s kinda hard to describe. I’m only getting the receiver nut tightened down as much as I can by hand at the moment, so maybe I’m being anal.

Some wiggle room in that area is normal and will snug up when you torque the castle nut.

E-man, that’s pretty much what I think I’m going to try and do. I was just worried that even after being torqued and stake down, that this back-and-forth twisting movement would still be possible given the right amount of force.

Though I suppose with the right amount of force, the whole gun can break in half…:D…but I just don’t want the buffer tube & stock to be able to twist under my own strength.

I’m tracking like a train! :slight_smile: Once you torque up the nut the play will 100% disappear, just take care to center up your RE to the lower so your stock won’t be canted prior to tightening to 40 ft/lbs.

I remember this being a problem with both of my A5 RE’s, Jack.

I had to re-torque my castle nut because the stock wasn’t quite true, and it would have driven me nuts.

They must have a very wide channel in those things.

HAHA, I hear ya! I just know that if my stock ends up being canted at all…It’ll bug the crap outa me!

On the other hand…the A5 tube on my other receiver has very very little play in this area.

It’s kind of weird, but I have seen this more than a few times. Would every one say this is endplate or re chanel?

Without having drawings to see the specs and measure the parts, I would say it’s tolerance stacking.

In my case, I believe it’s the receiver channel. I tried the tube with two other end-plates, and they all yielded the same results.

Any tips for keeping it straight? Tools?

This is normal. My assembly had the same “issue.”
