Budget .308 upper: CMMG, DPMS, Fulton Armory, or Other?

I have a DPMS-pattern receiver lying around, and I’m looking to do a 308 build for general use around the farm. If I was starting from scratch, I’d just get an M&P. I’d like to make this work, though. So far, I’m trying to choose between:

  • CMMG Mk3T
  • DPMS Recon
  • Fulton Armory FAR-308 Liberator LTE

I wouldn’t be objectionable to assembling my own upper, but I’m really not sure how much “art” is required. I don’t want to end up with something that’s not reliable because I can’t seem to tune it “just right.” Is that a valid concern, or am I overthinking it?

Absent tools and experience, I’d recommend buying a complete upper if you can.

I disagree completely. I say build your own. Not only does it give you the opportunity to customize your gun to be exactly how you want it but you learn a lot more about guns from building one rather than just buying them. Assembling an upper receiver isn’t exactly rocket science either. We’re talking about a barrel, an upper receiver, a barrel nut, a gas block/tube, and a torque wrench. Just make sure you order matching pattern parts. Thats my two cents.
