Has anyone noticed that the floorplates on Brownell’s AR mags seem very loose? Every one I have has a lot of wiggle room for the plates and the mag body tabs just barely hold them on. Anyone seen any issues with this or is it just an issue of aesthetics?
I plan on picking up some Ranger plates to see if that helps any.
I bought some of these mags because BCM started carrying them in lieu of the tan D&H mags they used to carry.
I’ve never owned any but the ‘tabs barely holding the floorplate on’ would concern me, even if they were just range mags. Nothing those Ranger Plates wouldn’t fix though.
I have a mag from Brownells that is like this. Runs fine and isn’t WIDE at the feed lips. But the bottom is wide and the floor plate drifts.
I was speculating that those Retards at Cprod were still supplying Brownells with their mag bodies, but I don’t know that to be true.
I think asking this question over on Barftard is what got me banned again. It doesn’t pay to question the Avila’s sponsors… even if the FACTS are on your side!
I have 12 of the brownells magazines. For the most part the feed lips are fine but they do seem to be a little wide on the bottom. I do have one that refuses to hold the bolt back and has been relegated to a training mag.
And replaced all of the followers with Magpul followers.
I’ve been keeping track of USGI magazines by the Cage Codes stamped on them. I’ve found that Tan Brownell mag do not have a Cage #. From what I’ve read, this means the Tan mag is not sold to the military.
I’ve seen Gray Brownell mags and they do have a Cage # - 12238. Again, from what I’ve found this Gray finish mag is the only one Brownell’s is approved to sell to the military. I saw a lot of the Gray ones w/ the latest USGI Tan Followers this past weekend at the New Orleans Gun Show still in a military labeled plastic bag for $12.
Brownell’s supposedly started making their own mags a few years ago and mainly sells them at their site and through BCM. They generally, all have the new Tan Follower.
I work at Brownells and can answer a few of the questions that come up on our mags. 1) If you have problems with our mags - any problem, even if it looks funky to you, send them back and request replacement, they will be sent, no charge 2) Our mags are not made by C-Products. 3) We only put cage codes on the mags we sell to the military. 4) Current mil contract mags have a tan, anti-tilt follower and we do not sell that follower to the public. I can’t even sneak one mil mag for myself! 5) Civilian mags and military mags are made on the same machinery, held to the same standards. 6) Many of the military mags seem to walk out the back gate of military installations and get sold both on the internet and at gun shows, if you want the tan follower, check around, they can be found.
I use only our green-follower mags in my ARs; (I do have one p-mag with a nordic extension for long 3-gun stages) and most of the ones I use are customer returns. Never had a problem.
The same plastics house that makes our green follower makes the tan for us. Other govt mag suppliers (Okay Ind, Center Ind., use their own molding houses. The design came to us on a government drawing when they made the change. It is not a Magpul follower but doesn’t tilt at all, just like the Magpul.
A long time ago Brownells sold CP mags, to include some that lacked moly finish on the interior. Brownells has been manufacturing their own USI mags for a number of years and they work great. Brownells has always been known for great customer service so anyone with issues should contact them.
Thanks for the info. I’ll contact BCM. I bought some of them almost 2 years ago and they’ve been boxed up until recently when I needed some mags for the range one day.
If you are able, please pass this info up the chain. EVERY Tan Brownell’s mag I own (12) has this issue, whether they were bought 2 years ago or this year.
RAMEngineer: Would you please pick out the worst two or three and send them back, to my attention? I’ll get them to the folks that need to see them, they’ll check to see if they are in tolerance. Could be a case of a min. tolerance floorplate in a max tolerance body. We keep pretty tight controls on all that because of the contract (body and floorplate are the same for civilian and military - only the follower and spring vary). If something has slipped through, we need to fix it. I have a returned mag at my desk and I can move the floorplate back and forth a bit but it looks like I’d have to use a screwdriver to pry it past the tab, and work pretty hard at that. Seems like a great forum, doesn’t degenerate into the name calling you see so often on the internet.
Is that a bad thing knowing who its from? I like the Brownell’s mags, no loose floor plates on mine. GTG, and like Larry said Brownell’s CS is top drawer.
