I have an unfired Colt 6920 sitting in my safe that I’m not doing anything with. I’m considering either getting an Adams Arms piston kit and modifying it or selling it and getting a BRN-180. I kinda lean towards the 180 and I love the recoil design, but hate the charging handle and how open the action is when the dust cover is open.
For those with hands on experience, which way would you go and why? What are the benefits of one over the other?
Don’t own, but have a bunch (4+) buddies who’ve run BRN180’s at PCSL events in Utah - https://www.pcsleague.com/. Most have DI AR’s and other piston and prefer BRN, however not sure any are running conversion kits. One Has SIG MCX & BRN and is selling MCX while waiting for a MCX Virtus. He’s hard on rifles and works in the fire arms industry.
Re: Dust Cover, was not an issue with Southern Utah Moon Dust during PCSL. Dust choked my FAL like a bad dragon last year, I borrowed a friends BRN180 for this year, going to shoot a BT APC at my next 2 gun. If it chokes I’m buying a BRN.
TBH, if it’s not been fired, are you getting out and shooting, or just bored? What’s the drive to go piston over DI? Plenty of DI rifles did just fine in UT moon dust.
Skip the Adams and the BRN, IMO the best bang for a buck in the piston game is the Wolf T91 upper, for around $600 you get a proven design with a hammer forged barrel.
Although a bit pricier than what you’ve mentioned, I suggest the PWS long stroke piston uppers. A single piece, no moving parts, design, but it does require the AR’s buffer system to function.
Not by any means an expert but I’ve heard that these are hardly built to actual Taiwanese military specifications and have been “dumbed down” for the US market. I think there have been past threads on this on here.
^^This, PWS makes a really good piston upper and BRN was done by their engineering team
T91 way I understand it uses US hammer forged barrel and US receiver the rest of the parts are Taiwan made. Cons are gas block is neutered no bayonet lug, barrel is nitrated not chromed and lack of aftermarket accessories. Did I mention you are getting a military proven short stroke gas piston hammer forged barrel upper for under $600.
If you shoot suppressed, the 10" BRN-180 is the least gassy upper I’ve ever shot. I’m a lefty, so I usually get a faceful of gas.
I’ve tried all the AR conversions, and none of them are worth it. Go for something engineered to be piston or shoot the factory Colt.
