Brits Going Back To 7.62x51

Interesting article from a British perspective. Much nonsense but still interesting.

Be sure to read the 4 pages of comments at the bottom. Many are from British veterans who give their opinions on the switch from the SLR to the SA80.

Lots of nonsense in that article.

True dat.

DailyMail is the British equivalent to the Weekly World News.

Too bad they didn’t try to bring back the .280 British.

“The problem of 5.56 mm rounds lacking killing power in firefights is worse because the Taliban use 7.62 mm rounds in their AK-47 Kalashnikovs and Russian sniper rifles. The SAS’s report said the 7.62 mm rounds flew farther and with greater accuracy – giving the enemy a distinct advantage, especially in long-range engagements.”

Whhaaaaaa?

Or 303…

I was in a gun store the other day and the guy behind the counter was telling me that the 5.56 is only deadly if it’s a precise hit in the head or heart and you won’t even notice it hitting you if it hits you in the arm, and will barely draw blood past 100 yards. But a 7.62 will punch a fist sized hole through a person or take someone’s arm clean off with one hit up to 800 yards.

My friend, who’s a good guy but very gullible, only uses 7.62 because he heard that SF, Rangers, SEALs, Delta, etc, NEVER touch 5.56 rifles and ONLY use 7.62 and, he’s heard it from “good sources” that the military is going to be switching to either the SCAR-H, AR-10, or M14 soon because the M4 just can’t kill effectively enough. He also scolded me for getting an AR instead of an M14 and told me about how Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan usually discard their M16s and pick up AKs because they never jam AND can kill anyone with one hit. He also insisted that the 7.62x39 is the same thing as a .308 until I proved to him that it wasn’t (by showing him one of his .308s and showing him an SKS round from the guy next to us on the range. He was flabbergasted  ).

It’s amazing how much bad information is out there. The idiocy of the anti-gunners is one thing, but if we’re to be taken seriously about our expertise on guns, we need to make sure all our dumb buddies get their facts straight.

You actually LISTEN to the dudes in the LGS?

If the 7.62x39 is so deadly and whatever then why haven’t our guys been cut to pieces overseas?

Have your bud read ‘Green Eyes, Black Rifles’, specifically the part where SGM Lamb talks about people who don’t think 5.56 works on humans.

Rubbish! Did they do their research by reading The Onion? Wonder if these wankers would care to be on the receiving end of a 5.56mm.

Maybe these tossers and sheep-shaggers should learn how to shoot propper.

Sadly, this sounds like a lot of the Army guys I know. They just sit around and repeat the silliness they heard from their buddies. If you dare question even basic facts or assumptions they hit you with the “I WAS THERE” nonsense (as if being their changes the fact that .308 is a longer range bullet than the .223).

Meh

My favorite urban gun legend from back in the day was the fact the Soviets 'could use our ammo in their guns but we couldn’t use their’s ’

The evidence given for that was that we had an 81mm mortar and they had an 82mm - case closed

That has always been my favorite - I laugh every time I think about it

Fixed. :D:D

Gimme a 5.56 with a good bullet anyday.

Oddly enough, I was in Iraq supporting an SF group and they never complained.

This is still floating around to this day! I have a couple buddies that have served and all of them too the person told me the Ak74 was a better rifle because they could shoot both 5.56 and there stuff. One even claimed the 74 would take standard M4 mags.

hahaha thats rich

I guess the original legend was about the Makarov which wasnt exactly 9x18 but 9.2mm.
Mr Vickers can the Makarov actually fire the 9para

I always got a kick out of the 'Nam vet, (or anyone else), who told me that the AK47 was designed to use the NATO 5.56 round so the Russians didn’t have to worry about supply issues.

Pointing out that the 7.62x39 predates the 5.56x45 by anout 20 years gets you the  look.

Only for entertainment purposes. .

George Carlin said that many people are either stupid, full of shit, or nuts, and in some cases, all three. This guy wasn’t nuts, but he certain one or both of the first two.

In addition to his “7.62 NATO: The Wonder Round” presentation, he also told me not to waste my money on names like Noveske, Daniel Defense, or Colt as I’m just paying for the name.

Oh yeah, he heard that from a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who may or may not be a Navy SEAL as well
