Brass ejection...

My brass is ejecting about 1 or 2 o’clock. Could this be a buffer issue? I am running an H2 buffer in a S&W 15T shooting 55 gr. 5.56 rounds. Ideas?

What brand ammo?

experiencing any malfunctions? Lighter buffer should move that ejection towards 3-4 oclock. 1-2 oclock ejection is cutting it kind of close in the cycling timing

I was under the impression that to move your ejection from 1-2 o’clock towards 3-4 o’clock you would have to use a heavier buffer.

No issues with firing. No malfunctions. Fired multiple strings of fire with no issues whatsoever. I dont know if a could go too much heavier than an H2 buffer. I havent seen anyone else fire it yet, maybe ill take a few steps back to asses whats really going on. I suppose it could be hitting the brass deflector and landing around 2oclock.

yep… generally forward flying brass means a light buffer. the most reliable brass pattern seems to be 3 o’clock

Wow 1 or 2 o’clock with and H2 buffer! I would check your buffer spring to make sure that it is in spec. If it is then the next place would be the gas port on the barrel. S&W AR are known to have large gas port on their barrels.

Looking at the chart, how is it possible to have brass ejecting to the rear beyond 4:30? Wouldn’t the brass deflector stop that from happening? Then is it a less than optimal sign to see impact marks on the brass deflector? I’m confused, please help:confused:

brass that comes out screaming slams into the deflector (usually just the forward most cut edge, where it’s relieved for the ejection port), which then bounces it out toward the front. brass thats flying out correctly will just “tink” the deflector and angle out perpendicularly. brass that’s moving too slow will sort of toss out toward the back, maybe brushing the deflector, but not striking it with enough force to actually be deflected.

Not all uppers have brass deflectors

True, but the linked graphic is only applicable for uppers that do have brass deflectors.

I was under the impression that you get heavier buffers to delay the extraction, as carbine gas systems with carbine buffers were extracting too early. People added extractor orings to increase tension to delay extraction also. 1-2oclock makes me think its extracting too late, when the bolt is actually moving forward instead of extracting when its going back which would make it around the 4oclock. Correct me if this understanding is incorrect. Even the chart indicates that a symptom of 1-2oclock extraction is heavy buffer.

Maybe if he has the extractor oring he could remove it to see if it helps. I would try this first before buying a new buffer.

The picture lists the issue first (for 1-2 o’clock it states “overgassed”) then after the colon it is listing possible solutions / corrective actions. The mention of “heavier buffer” is a proposed solution: not an indication of what is causing the problem.

It is suggesting a heavier buffer / carrier for overgassed weapons and lighter buffer / carrier for short-stroking weapons.

Empties flying forward does not indicate that the bolt is literally throwing them forward. BKB explains it above:

Surprised type of load/ammo has not been further discussed. For my mid-length with H-buffer, under powered brass falls around 4:00 and hot loads fall around 2:00. I would have expected the opposite.

my BCM middy with H buffer ejects Wolf at 4oclock

+1 Can’t report on other ammo as I have only shot wolf so far

no malfunctions = do not mess with it

point taken but considering that one M4 malfunction myths article, if a gun gets dirtier changing to a lighter buffer will let it run a little longer due to less drag in a dirty gun. If hes ejecting 1-2oclock clean, then dirty he might be ejecting earlier than 1-2 o’clock which sounds like it would increase the chance of a malfunction - extracting too late.

3-4 o’clock sounds like it would give a higher “tolerance” to being dirty. To me 3-4oclock is more about looking nice. As a gun gets dirtier I have the feeling that it will drift towards a 2-3oclock, 1-2oclock as it gets dirtier, the bolt getting slower, and extraction happening later.

Anyone correct me if I am mistaken please.

You have it backwards. The reason it is forward ejecting is because it is bouncing hard off the root of the brass deflector.

The harder it hits the deflector from a faster moving bolt, the more forward it is deflected.

Well maybe its just too clean then… guess ill have to shoot some more this weekend.
