BP-02 AK Mount Repeatability

To date, I’ve been very pleased with the modified BP-02 mount that I’m using with an Aimpoint -

One of the keys to success is to know that as the mount is mounted/dismounted, the clamp will need to be periodically re- tightened. Mine has now “taken a set” to the point that when it is slid all the way on, it slides on smoothly but snugly. Once the mount has conformed to the rail, it holds zero extremely well.

After a majorly disappointing range outing with a new AR “big name brand” upper last weekend (couldn’t get it to hold any better than 10 MOA at 50 yards), I moved my Aimpopint Comp3 back to my AK103k and returned to the range to sight it back in. Shooting off a bench on sandbags, I got it zeroed at 50 yards to hold a few inches high.

I then moved to 100 yards to confirm the zero. Interestingly, the group remians a few inches high at 100 yards as well, which should translate to about 4 inches low at 200 with the 123 grain load. Since we’ll be engaging 200 yard targets at next weekend’s carbine match (and my AR is now without an upper), I wanted to make sure I have the AK dialed in.

Below is a 10-shot composite 100-yard target. I fired 5 rounds, removed the Aimpoint/BP-02 mount, remounted and then fired 5 more rounds -

The hole on the far right is a pulled shot from the first string. The extreme spread for all ten shots is 3-1/2 inches, 2-7/8 inches for the nine shots excluding the flyer. Not only is the BP-02 mount - when properly adjusted - very repeatable, but my Krebs Custom AK is incredibly consistent using this Barnaul Brown Bear load.

Since my lousy eyes can only see the Aimpoint dot as sort of a smear, it doesn’t lend itself very well to precision shooting. I may have to mount a decent 1-4X scope on this rifle some day to see what it is really capable of.

Oh snap.

I think thats what I need for my sgl20 and slr107fr to round them out.

Where did you aquire the mount’s?

The BP-02 can be found at Kalinka. If you want the AP to sit lower, you will have to modify the mount the way I did. Even modified, there’s no co-witness.

I would wait and see how this one turns out. If/when it becomes available, I will be trying one out - it will get the AP even lower and give a bottom 1/3 co-witness.

Not an if proposition at this point. Thanks for the plug though!
I am in the pricing negotiations with the machine shop at the moment. I am also going to have at least one more shop quote as well - I’m not satisfied with the pricing I have right now.

That’s good news!

I wouldn’t let the machine shop cost get in the way right now. If these come out like your drawings, are solid and reliable, you will sell them. That will put you in better position to negotiate favorable pricing.

BTW, count me in for one of the scope mount models too.

I am negotiating an initial order quantity of 100 pieces plus 5 beta test samples. I am trying to get the best pricing I possibly can. No sense building a great mount if it costs too much relative to current market targets.

Not to worry though - I’ll get her started soon.

This is true, but you’ll have a unique and considerably superior product;

  • No other side mount is designed from the ground-up to co-witness
  • No other mount will be as strong
  • No other mount will look as good

The AK platform is no longer considered a “poor man’s AR” to serious competitors and riflemen as the rapidly expanding selection of quality accessories shows. Your timing with these new mounts is perfect.

Canonshooter, I’m still using my modified mount on the A1R with an Aimpoint M2 and couldn’t be happier. It holds zero perfecly as well.

Hey Edwin, long time - no talk! I hope all is well on your end.
