Bought was what supposed to be a spikes, and

Got it home, has the Spikes logo on the lower, but,

no STI roll mark on the bolt or bolt carrier,
no STI roll mark on the barrel under the forearm grip,
no brandname buttstock
no spikes logo on top of the rail under the removable carry handle,
castle nut not staked

This was a cash deal from an individual who said the rifle is 6 years old. He told me the rifle was bought when spikes was first starting out.

Model number ST15
Serial # - 140XX (5 digital serial number)

Is it possible this is an early Spikes like what the guy said, or is it a spikes lower with some no-name upper?

The barrel is marked 5.56 NATO 1:7 between the front sight and the flashhider.

Contact Spikes and give THEM the serial # and other info. Could very well be a non factory build.

I don’t think they always engraved their logo on every possible part the way they do today. You probably should have inspected it a little closer and walked away if you had any doubts. With the number of stripped lowers they’ve sold and that I’ve seen at gunshows over the years, there’s no telling what you have got.

I have a couple of calls into spikes customer support.

They said they were being overwhelmed with phone calls, so they took my number and said they would call me back.

Part of it is my fault because I did not take more time to look at the rifle.

Maybe this will help, the only marks I have found on the upper is a square on the right hand side, and the hammer is marked F2.

Beggars can’t be choosers. If it’s a 1/7 twist rate w/ a 5.56 chamber then I’d rock it.

Are you worried they may have subbed GOOD parts in place of the SPIKES?

The upper receiver will have a spider on top of the receiver. Remove the carry handle and see what’s under it.

Who cares! If the price was good for you, shoot and enjoy. I doubt you’ll be returning it with the current market as it is.

As a matter of fact you might be able to sell it for a tidy sum.

Damn. Beat me to it.

Sometimes, parts make it through without getting logoed. I have received a few Spike’s BCGs, directly from Spike’s, in sealed packaging, that were missing the spider logo. Still their stuff, just somehow got missed during the logo process.

This is probably a stupid question but is this sarcasm or are you being serious?

Levi

The stripped upper reciever I aquired through BCM has the same square on the side, FWIW.

That just means the raw forging was made at Brass Aluminum.

In short it means nothing.

I don’t “do” spikes. Let the ARFcom booger eaters have that product.

Hes being serious, and I concure with him…
This is M4carbine man… Spikes isnt liked around these parts… lol

Well, I suppose that’s good to know. I was thinking that if I built an AR I would use a Spikes lower. What tends to be the most popular (quality) lower around here?

Levi

Ummm define building? Like stripped lower? and lower parts kit? buffer tube, receiver plate? Barrel, rail, barrel nut, upper reciever, pinned fsb, or low pro?, or shaved fsb? gas tube, muzzle brake?

Or just buying a complete upper and lower? lol, cause thats not building. Thats buying two pieces of a rifle and slapping them together.
I would say a spikes lower would be fine mated with a BCM upper or anything of qaulity really. Im not sure how in spec spikes parts are, but I think you would be okay… To be on the safe side. COLT, BCM, DANIEL DEFENSE. But with this gun ban scare your going to find none of that… lol sorry. Or at least struggle finding qaulity stuff right now. Good luck.

Thanks, didnt realize that, but good to know.

Mega seems to be acceptable from what I have read…

TBH it’s really more of a dream than a reality. I don’t have the funds and everything is back ordered anyway but it gives me something to think about during the day. If I was going to build one though I would probably go with a stripped Noveske upper and barrel (remember, dreaming here) or possibly DD with a DD AR 15 Lite Rail, and a BCM BCG and for the lower a Geissele SSA, LMT SOPMOD stock, and various other parts for the lower and upper. I also know a gunsmith very well who would probably teach me anything I wanted to know or do with it. Anyway, like I said I probably won’t own an AR for a long time or even ever if they are banned but piecing it together in my mind does keep me occupied throughout the day .

There’s a lengthy thread here dedicated to Spike’s. I read the whole damned thing and recommend that you do the same.

Personally, I really like their rifles.

I hope you find yours is just an older style and it works for you.
