How much clearance does the bolt need when pulled fully rearward? In regards to the bolt stop. Also should you be able to see the bolt at all in the ejection port?
Just installed a BCM extension, and not sure if I should back it off one more turn.

The receiver extension should have just one possible position. It should just hold the buffer detent in place without being so far forward that it’s starting to mash the tip of the buffer detent.
Also… yeah… you should be able to see some of the bolt in the ejection port when it’s locked back.

Bolt catch release stop. I haven’t been in the AR game for awhile, sorry my nomenclature is rusty everybody. Can we just set aside the posturing and dick measuring for a second? I know everybody wants to earn cool points here, I’m guilty as well.
I want to know, with the BOLT pulled FULLY TO THE REAR, how much of it is supposed to be visible through the ejection port? How much clearance is proper between it and the bolt catch release stop when fully rearward?
Pull out the action spring and separate the spring from the buffer. Drop the buffer down the tube and drop the bolt carrier group on top of it. That it the maximum rearward travel of the bolt.
Do you think you have a problem? if so post a picture, someone will tell you if something is wrong…
Yeah, I have a CMMG lower that I just installed a BCM extension on, and I’m trying to figure out if I need to back the extension out one more turn or not. I’ll try to get pics up. With the bolt pulled fully to the rear, a small portion of it is still visible through the ejection port, and I’m not sure if this is optimal for the bolt to lock on empty. Getting to the range is not possible for awhile unfortunately, otherwise I would have just shot the damn thing.

Yes of course, when “locked back”. I’m speaking of the bolt when fully to the rear, at the very end of travel.

You’re not getting it. You don’t “back out” the receiver extension. It can only be installed one length as markm said.
Roger that, understood. I believe if I backed it out one more turn, I’d barely be capturing the buffer retainer. So that’s not an option, I understand now. Thank you to you guys.
Ok… good. I did just look at this as I was cleaning up my AR from today’s shoot. When I pull the CH back until the buffer maxes out, the bolt is about lined up with the back of the port. Regardless… this isn’t the right way to gauge your RE install. Sounds like you have it squared away.
