Bit by the bug FNG question on how many AR's I need

First sorry for the dumb ass question. But I’ve been bitten by the AR bug and just simply love my Colt 6920. I shoot the damn thing five days a week thats how much I like it. I’ve owned 3 AR’s in the past but never shot them and sold them. On my current gun I’ve got at least the value of the rifle in optics, lights, rails, mags and so forth. I’ve always kept to my rule of having two of every defensive weapon I own. I broke that rule with my 870 as it just goes and goes. Do I need two AR’s or am I developing a hoarding complex? I’m just afraid as much as I like my 6920 I’m gonna shoot it out. Money’s short I’ve got two kids and getting married next month but if I need that 2nd AR I figure I can find the cash. Thanks

2 is 1 and 1 is NONE. Any questions???

I started out wanting to own only 2 and now own 6!

If I had it all to do over again though, I’d own a 6920 and a 6933 and be done with it. Put a 3x Compact ACOG on the 6920 and an Aimpoint ML3 and a suppressor on the 6933 and be well equipped to do anything I might ever want.

The only thing I might do different now would be to replace the 5920 with a Noveske N4 carbine.

If I didn’t also have a thing for motorcycles I’d be ok. Looks like I’m in for trouble. Question is bare mininum you need 2 AR’s no?

I think you need at least two of any gun. Two carry guns, two carbines, hell, two knives. I like to have each be slightly different (G19 and G26, 16" and 11.5", serrated 4" and plain 3.5", etc.) so that they excel at different things but can be pressed into service for whatever task that may come about.

I started out like everyone else with just one AR SP1 a long time ago when I was just a starving student, now I have four ARs (and a bunch of AKs and other military type semi auto rifles).

My answer to your question is yes you need at least a minimum of one more for backup, you could either buy the components one by one or save money and get the whole complete carbine.

The ARs that I have are for different purposes but my main ones are my two carbines, one is my Colt 6721 with a midlength gas system barrel which is my general purpose heavy duty outdoors weapon and it’s backed up by a LMT 16" M4 carbine mainly for home defense.

My other two ARs are mainly for target shooting and plinking, my Colt 20" A2 rifle and RRA 16" 9mm carbine.

I mainly use my 9mm carbine for indoor shooting ranges, plinking and my wife could use it just in case SHTF happens.

I still got the AR bug that’s why I’m still building my next precision rifle and maybe a backup recon precision carbine after that, most likely I’ll end up with six ARs.

I currently have six as well. But I will eventually only keep my Colt 6920 and Colt Commando. Its fun to own six as my friends have something to do when we shoot, but I think its high time they get their own toys.

I agree with you Rob S. just trying to rationalize spending money I don’t currently have. I have two Glock 19’s (my carry guns one to shoot, one to carry). I am seeing another 6290 with an ACOG of sorts.

For me the issue starts with how many people in the household, for me its 4 (although two of them are still in diapers) I need to get a carbine, recce, SPR, varmint, and piston rifle for each of us before I will be content with just buying extra rifles.

Hi my name is stik and I have an AR addiction!!

We all need a 12 step, LOL…

But seriously, I started out the same way, after the AWB sunsetted, I bought a RRA lower and doublestar upper, then wanted a full size 20" rifle, then wanted to build one from the ground up, then wanted to get a colt, then felt the need to get an LMT. Not counting all the optics on each one. Now I am building 3 more just to put in the safe and possibly sell in 2-5 years and maybe they will pay for all my other stuff. I was young when the initial AWB went into effect and remember at gun shows seeing off brand CAR 15’s for $450, then after the ban, 7-900. I also follow the same trend of having 2 of everything (or at least same caliber that take the same mags/parts- Glock 26, Glock 19/ Glock 22, Glock 35/ 2 870’s, etc.)

Go ahead and get a back up gun, plenty of mags, an extra parts kit and an extra bolt and if you can find some quality ammo for a decent price, stock up on it or reloading components.

No matter how many you have, you always need one more…as long as you can convince your spouse:D

And there in lies the problem!

Asking forgiveness is easier than asking permission;)

You got two kids to take care of…and a new wife…and money’s a little short…

Priorities…Priorites

you can always have more uppers than lowers - they don’t count.
“it’s not another gun honey, just a new add-on PART”.

Right now I have 4 lowers - I plan to have 7 AR’s

Lets see

  1. Old School SP1 - 20"
  2. Old School XM177E2 Clone 11.5"
  3. 10.5" LMT
  4. 14.5" LMT
  5. 16" Stag Lefty (plinker) will be replaced by 16" LMT Upper
  6. 18" SPR
  7. 9mm RRA - 10.5"

I’d say two complete carbines and then a couple of additional uppers.

I tried that, but somehow lowers keep appearing for the uppers I buy.

Yeah, there’s always that. Ask me how I know…

well once you have more than 5 or 6 lowers - you kind of run out of different configurations for them. many more options for uppers/combos.
