Billet Receiver, Need Help...

Hello everyone,

I’m new here so this will be my first actual post, and I need some help, I’m fairly new to the ar scene and I already own my own factory built ar and I’m thinking about building my own custom, and after talking with grant a few weeks ago in his store (G&R Tactical) when I went there for the first time, grant now has me really thinking (thanks grant, LOL), so my question is what is everyones opinion on who has the best made billet lower, and also do they make a billet upper and who would be considered the best on the upper as well? Now for me money is not a problem, so I want my first build to be top notch but I’m not sure where to start, and I didnt want to call Grant every few minutes bugging him with tons of questions, I know hes a very busy guy. But anyways after reading alot of posts in here, it shows alot of you know what your doing and so now I come to you for help and info for a newbie. Thank You all for your time.

Well I don’t really know what I am doing but I like my Vltor billet upper. It has a unique look.

If you like the traditional look but want a true upper that’s billet, LaRue makes one that a lot of people are happy with.

My favorite billet lower is not made and my second is a Daniel Defense which I don’t believe is available…

SMOS makes a nice one (they made Larue’s for SHOT), it is similar to the Magpul lower.

POF also makes a nice billet lower.

So the uninformed guy asks–What is the advantage of the billet receiver and why would you buy one over a LMT, or Mega etc?

So what your saying if I am understanding this right, is as long as the upper or lower is built properly for long term use and abuse, it shouldn’t matter if it’s billet or not, it will perform the same either way, if this is right then I understand exactly what your saying and definately makes sense to me, if i got it all wrong then god help me (lol) I got alot to learn. But either way so you know I appreciate your imput and trying to help me understand.

there are no functional advantages.
Its just cool-kid kit.

there CAN be, however functional/accuracy advantages with machined billet upper receivers. However, perfectly acceptable accuracy can be had with conventional forged uppers.

Thanks for the info, I guess then I’ll just stick to what I have already and just purchase another one from them, but I’ll just get their upper and lower and build it from there. Again Thanks, will definately save some money, just more to spend on other things to add.

If you want a billet lower have you looked at sundevilmfg.com ? They were the ones building the the S&W 15T’s before.

No I haven’t, I don’t know all the manufactures that make billet receivers, so thats why I posted this thread, but I will look into that company, Thank You for the info much appreciated.

Who is SMOS? I did a couple of searches and didn’t come up with anything to do with a billet receiver.

You cannot beat VLTOR’s MUR-1A for a billet upper, both of my AR’s are VLTOR uppered. I cannot speak on billet lowers, but I think the SunDevil looks the best of any billet lower… plus it is only $149.00 at Rainierarms.com

Thanks, I like the nice clean look of those.

I have a SunDevil billet lower and couldn’t be happier. Mega make some damn nice one as well but they are hard to come by sometimes.

Both of my lowers are Mega. I will not use any other brand.

Here are 2 good sources for Mega lowers:

Why Mega? Just curious. I am about to order a couple of nicer lowers and checking manufacturers.

Actually that is incorrect they will building the compatition model and not the M&PT.

When S&W offered the M&P15 PC it had Sun Devil upper and lower receivers. This model has been discontinued.

They make top notch lowers and uppers. They are an aerospace company that does the lower upper stuff on the side and you can imagine the quality of aerospace components.

The fit, finish and feel of the Mega Gator lower is almost that of a Billet Lower. They are great.
