My company did very well last year and I am very lucky and gratefull to be getting a really nice bonus in the next few weeks. I ran it by my wife and she is cool with me getting another rifle.
The question is which one. I have RRA, Stag and a Colt HBAR from back in the day, and a Bushy.
This time I want to go high end. DI or Piston are both acceptable to me. Its about getting the best overall quality and accurate rifle for the $.
Do I go Noveske, LWRC, LMT, Larue, BCM or wait for the SIG516 or Colt 6940?
I like the Noveske barrels and the reports about unreal accuracy out of the 12.5" barrels. I have handled the LWRC and they are really nice also. The 6940 is nice but I would like it better if it was a mid length.
I am pretty sure that any of the ones I have listed would be great rifles but a little input wouldn’t hurt before I buy.
Unless you have a real need, I would put it away for a rainy day… However; that being said, I believe the Colt 6920 is the standard that all others are judged by and that they are fantastic carbines…
Think about the gaps in your armory. What would a new weapon do for you, that the other’s cannot? Or would this be a replacement?
Once you have a role and a cost in mind, you might think about sending Grant (G&R Tactical) an email. He does some excellent custom builds, and has Noveske barrels and lowers. Plus he is a BCM dealer.
Just my hideously biased opinion - I would put the money into a DI gun over a piston at this point.
And how about a class? That kind of money would pay for a top tier class from someone like Vickers Tactical, Magpul Dynamics, TigerSwan, Grey Group, etc.
I agree with Buck that unless you absolutely need a new rifle put it away or invest it.
However, if the urge to buy a new rifle is too great then go with the BCM and save the difference between the cost of it and the LWRC/Noveskes. IMO the BCM is on par with the Colts, will serve your well and save you a ton of coin.
If I was in your position, I’d sell the RRA, Stag, and Bushy and then get a Colt 6920/6940 or a Noveske M4. I’d avoid the piston driven ARs right now as they are a mixed bag of reliability and durability. As far as the Sig 556 goes…once again, mixed reviews on reliability.
You may also want to look into getting a complete SPR upper with a complete BCG from Centurion Arms and just drop it onto your Colt HBAR lower, add some Nav Spec NF glass, and call it a day… That will be something very exclusive and of the best quality…
WOW! Thanks for the input. I really don’t “NEED” another rifle but I do want one. I have two AKs, a Norinco preban bought in the 80s and a few years ago I bought a nice Yugo M70. They both go nicely with a Galil ARM I have been sitting on.
A SIG522 might be a good/fun budget minded way to plink without breaking the bank. I had a TacSol .22 upper and I liked it very much but it was a bit more touchy than I liked so I sold it.
I really need to consider a carbine course. I never have taken one before. I think that needs some serious thought. Thanks for that input.
Ammo. Its like money IMHO, you can never have too much.
The BCM route is ranking high up there on my list and God knows my wife would appreciate the cost savings.
Maybe a BCM middy with a Larue or DD rail with Magpul CTR or UBR and an Eotech with 3X magnifier. Or a similar setup but with a Noveske barrel.
I don’t own a Colt 6920. I have a STAG Model 1. Yep its not a COLT but it is pretty nice and similar in many ways. It does have the best upper to lower fit of all my “production” AR rifles. A COLT 6920 would be kinda cool to have along with the HBAR I already have. HMMMMM. Prices on the Colts continue to drop and are easy to find at the moment.
I think I am down to COLT or BCM. Can anyone make a case for one over the other or is it a Ford/Chevy type deal for those who have used them.

Bingo. There’s a sucker born every minute. Sell the RRA, Stag and BM, and get a BCM Middy or 6920. With the money made on the sales, you can also put it into ammo and/or training. Save or invest the bonus.
I would go with the BCM as suggested. Quality rifle with excellent CS as well. I use their uppers on my work guns and couldn’t be happier. I also like the DD and Larue rails.
I would also strongly encourage ammo and a quality training class or two. If you went with the BCM and sold the RRA and BM you could get the new rifle, ammo, and training and still be GTG with a quality rifle.
Well I am with the rest of you, sell the lower end AR’s you have now, take that money and by a top end rifle. The bonus could be used for optics, another high end rifle, training or combos of all of those. What about buying one of the many hot new 308 rifles? That would give you CQB with what you have and the 308 would give you more of a stand off rifle that could work CQB if needed.
I don’t need more rifles either but have been buying some different rifle set ups, a couple of piston rifles because I do see some benefits in the piston. I figure I will form my own opinion about the piston rifles by owning and using them rather than just reading peoples opinions, some of which who don’t own them. I also picked up an MSAR AUG clone which is really cool and fills the SBR role with out having to be an SBR (not legal in my state).
First, sell the RRA and Bushmaster rifles, along with the upper receiver assembly, buffer, and bolt carrier group from the Stag. Then use the cash you made from those sales to purchase a midlength BCM upper receiver assembly with a DD Lite 9.0 rail system, a BCM bolt carrier group, and a H buffer for your Stag lower.
If you don’t have an optic, get an Aimpoint with a LaRue mount. And get some rail covers and a VFG or AFG for that rail.
Use the rest of your bonus for ammo, spare parts, and carbine courses.
