It’s also pretty stupid on the part of the crowd. Here’s a woman who has been under threat at a public engagement…why not crowd around her vehicle! Surely nothing bad can come of hanging around at a scene like that!

Just out of curiosity, did you work with that part of the world during the mid-90s when Afghanistan had no real dominate faction(I think that is a fair characterization of the situation of Afghanistan pre-Pakistani support of the Taliban. If not, please correct me.)?

The mid-90s was way before my time. My boss has been around since 1991, though. In typical American fashion, nobody paid any of the Stans much attention post-USSR until 9/11. We ourselves only went anti-Taliban after they refused to give up AQ/UBL post-9/11.
It is disgusting to me that we even play patty cake w/ Pakistan - regardless of who’s in charge. Musharraf, like Diem in Vietnam, is no dummy. The ISI has been supporting the Taliban, for quite some time - even though they like to prersent themselves as staunch enemies of extremism.
Musharraf know that our policies dictate that we need a good relationship w/ him, regardless of what he does. Since our foreign policy rules out doing things ourselves and has a long history of hiring incompetent, corrupt thugs, his place is unshakeable as long as he says the right things and pretends like he’s going to do the right things, uh, soon. “We’ll have a gay rights parade any day now! Promise!”
I think he didn’t want an election to go ahead, so they picked up the phone and got some nut to kill her. He knows the last thing we want is more obvious problems with our wonderful, progressive teammate in the GWOT - Musharraf.
Screw Pakistan. We should invade those mountains or nuke them. maybe Pakistan SHOULD have a civil war.
I don’t know what pakistan is like in terms of PSD politics, but i recall that there was some backlash when Zarqawi killed the Minister of the Interior(?) right outside the green zone. It turns out we had offered him a security detail and he refused - he wanted a PSD made up of his own family members, Arab culture and all. the US gov offered to train these family members but they said they didn’t need it. I think that’s how the story went. I would have a platoon of BMP’s escorting me around, if i ever made it big in pakistan.
