She was friendly to the west and overall the type of leader the world needs more of in the middle east, as I am sure many here know well. Now we can be unsure of the path the Pakistan will follow, which is of great concern due to their nuclear capability and it’s many radicalized “citizens”.
I was not in a good mood when I heard this. I was hopefull of what she might have been able to bring to the region, given then fact that she wanted to work with the tribal areas of the country to try and push out al qaeda.
She was a socialist, so I’m not sure how “Pro-west” she was.
My theory is the the Taleban killed her in hopes of everyone blaming it on Musharraf. Then when Pakistan falls into chaos, the Taleban will try to take over the whole country.
Word is she got 2 AK bullets to the neck, and that the explosion wasn’t what killed her.
Perhaps that is correct, I can’t personally say. However I think some may be missing the bigger picture here, which is that she was likely a substantially better option than anyone else known to have a chance at leadership there. She was a moderate, and Pakistan needs one badly. Plus, as a woman, how much would she have really supported the Taliban who would have her covered from head to toe and cowering in a hut somewhere in an instant if they ever had the chance? Or, maybe they would just kill her anyway for being friendly to the US. Seems ridiculous, impractical, and suicidal if you ask me. Almost all terrorists, whether Taliban or not, are radical hard liners.
Her interest in AQ and the Taliban (and vice-versa) had nothing to do with her sex, but rather the position and political power she and her family before her held.
Don’t think of her as some woman cowering in a mud hut, think of her as the principal decision maker of the world’s most powerful Muslim nation, who enjoyed immense popularity that went back generations in her family.
With all due respect, I think you fall short of proving your point here. Maybe her family did support terrorists years ago, but what does that directly have to do with her as an individual? She is a woman with political power, a moderate, friendly to the west, and a supporter of democracy. All these things are despised by hard line extremists. On top of that, they just killed her. Yet, you think she secretly or overtly supported them anyway?
Please explain further, as I am just curious as to your frame of logic.
SHE supported Taliban efforts in Afghanistan. SHE harbored and supported AQ as well as other terrorist organizations when she was in power. She is a moderate because the media says she is a moderate. She was “friendly” to the west for the same reason any of then are friendly to the west…she did not want to face the repercussions of openly denouncing US foreign policy. My frame of reference is probably more relevant than my frame of logic…I only work in that part of the world, and political considerations on many levels influence my ability to do my job more than anything else. I don’t have a point to make, her support of these organizations is an acknowledged fact and that is why she is one more dead terrorist to me and the rest of the people fighting radical Islam.
I don’t think any of us can say who was responsible for her death at this point, as there are a lot of people who would have wanted her dead.
She supported democracy, one clear definition of a muslim moderate any way you look at it.
The same reason you give for her being friendly towards the west is the very same that one could use to logically explain her “support” of the Taliban and AQ. Essentially just doing what she had to do until she got to a position where she could start phasing them out. Who can really say? Think she wants to see herself as the only woman in Pakistan who is free of tyranny?
You said earlier to essentially ignore the fact that the Taliban would have her covered and cowering in a hut, but why? That is a fact, is it not? Think they would one day overthrow or kill her (as they did) if they could just because she is who she is? I do, and to say that she really, truly supported them seems like trying to justify a black man trying to support the KKK.
If you work there, then you have my respect and I will assume you know more than I. However, I have some very credible contacts as well both overseas and here at home. I won’t go into detail regarding who they are or what they do, but I will just say that there may be another side to the story you tell.
Understand I don’t think she was solely (or even largely) responsible for Pakistan’s willingness to fund/harbor/support terrorism. It’s a publicly known fact that AQ fled into Pakistan and has free access to come and go as they please to this day, long after the end of her time at the helm.
It’s not at all inconceivable that her support of the Taliban could have been to keep them out of her country and occupied next door. But there is no mistaking what her support of AQ and other organizations who targeted the US on our own soil meant.
I just don’t want anyone to think she was the answer to Pakistan’s problem with terrorism, and that she was for the US having an influence over there. Whoever whacked her most likely did us a favor. We can exert much more influence on Musharraf than most of the other possibilities.
As far as the nukes mentioned above, I wouldn’t worry. I bet there are a lot more eyes on them than Pakistan is providing.
Just goes to show you that you better have good PSD over there. I saw video of the other guy who wants to take over who was also in exile. All it would take is one retard bomber to take out a few dozen people including him. Their PSD tactics suck something bad.
