I will hopefully be buying an AR soon after over two years of hanging around forums like this and learning as much as possible. So I was looking at LMT’s web page and noticed that their completes are not priced all that high. I was originally going to build this rifle using all LMT components because it would be cheaper than buying complete. But now that I see their entry model for under 1300 I’m starting to rethink my buying strategy. SO would it be cheaper to build or buy? I would research more and put together a parts and price list but the only internet I have is on my phone which would take forever. Sorry if this has already been asked or if I am not making much sense. Thank you.
I will have the newest LMT catalog in a few days, until then I dont have a clue. LMT has great customer service
According to my calculations, the parts (lower, upper, bcg, charging handle, handguards, buis) to build a rifle at LMT MSRP are $1144.90. This does not include the magazine and sling a complete rifle would come with, but you’d probably want to upgrade those anyway. If you don’t want the LMT BUIS (I really like it), you could shave off a bit more cash. With the money you save, you could upgrade to a lower with a SOPMOD.
Keep in mind that if you order the upper and lower in the same order, you might still get charged the excise tax. Also, it will take substantially less time to find a complete rifle than to find all the parts one by one.
ETA: You also get more flexibility when you build. For instance, you could get a 14.5" upper to permanently attach a hider to instead of the 16".
I have to quote someone in order to reply so bare with me. But it will be my first rifle from a dealer, right now I only have a shotgun which was purchased from a friend
The only thing you would have to get through a dealer would be the lower. Everything else can ship straight to your house. At the moment, you can get a standard lower here for $329.
A couple of weeks ago, I found three complete SOPMOD LMT rifles for $1265 plus shipping on Gunbroker. The deals are out there, you just have to be patient…and lucky. Depending on how patient you are, you can piecemeal one together for way less than retail, or way more than retail.
No SOPMOD, but this is a brand new, complete rifle for $1299.95 plus $20 shipping. Pretty good, all things considered.

Oh, yes. Here here. Didn’t realize they were still in stock, and I am actually quite surprised at that. G&R is the place to go, and you might get a M4C cut. Doesn’t hurt to ask. ![]()
I would but lmt has got the gun available for fifteen bucks less
Really depends on what you mean by available. Ordering from LMT direct involves a back order of about six to nine months last I checked. G&R is one of the few online retailers that has the rifles in stock. Kiesler Police Supply also currently has (or at least did earlier this week) them in stock for less, if you are a LEO.
I called LMT last week and was told 8 - 12 months for a complete rifle. I’d pay an extra $15 to get one in a week or less. ![]()
After doing some research about LMT availability it was much faster for me to buy a slightly used (about 100 rounds down range) LMT upper w/ F/A BCG and a new lower (both via G-Broker), and the cost wasn’t much different than new (worth every $ to avoid a long wait)…plus I got a few extras the previous owner had installed on the upper. The lower was a new item being sold by a gun shop. I didn’t steal it, but I think I did OK.
Delivered it came to $1250, not bad for a slightly upgraded LMT.
Watch the various AR15 forum classified sections too, people upgrading often part with the old to get the new, so you may find something right up your alley. (disclaimer: this advice was recently given to ME, no luck for me yet but it’s another place to look.)
Happy Hunting. ![]()
Where are you located? I have 2 NIB LMTs, PM me if interested.
14.5" uppers in stock at Bravo Company for $485 (better act fast).
Complete lower in stock at machineguntours.com for $329
You’d only be a BCG ($130ish), charging handle ($25ish), and handguards ($25ish) away from a shootable rifle. The only hard to get part is the BCG, and they’ve been in stock pretty frequently lately.
