Best way to swap mounts?

I am switching the mount on my Aimpoint H-1. It currently is locktited (blue) to the old KZ mount. Before I strip anything, I want to be sure of what I’m doing. I’ve read that I should heat the screws to release the locktite before unscrewing.

What is the best way to heat up the screws? I was thinking about using a soldering iron for a few seconds then trying to unscrew it. Will this work, or is there a better way?

Once I have the old mount off is there anything I need to do to prepare the threads on the Aimpoint before attaching it to the new LaRue mount?

Thanks

I’ve always been able to pop off blue locked grubs with no heat, but that may just be due to clean living on my part. It might be worth you gently trying without heat first.

This also points up why I use far more purple than blue.

Touching the screws to be undone with a soldering iron for a few seconds will work, as will a hair dryer or heat gun applied for a mite longer.

I’ve stripped just enough stuff that’s been blue-Loctited that I don’t bother even trying to crank on something until it’s been heated, any more. Mongo-ing stuff just doesn’t seem to work for me, no matter how careful I try to be, and I’m sick of having to replace screws.

As for re-installing, you could clean any male or female threads before re-applying Loctite, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a requirement. That stuff is good for 5 diss/ass events.

Thanks, I’ll give the soldering iron a try when the new mount arrives.
