Best VIDEO for combat handgun

Production quality out of the handgun DVD was far better than the carbine I and II DVD’s. It seemed (I have no idea) that the handgun vids were far better planned and structured for the DVD release, and the carbine vids were whatever happened in class got thrown in as best it can. I attributed it to the learning curve a TV series goes through. I really enjoy, and learned so much from, the Magpul DVD’s.

They don’t use the slide stop/release either…

The most useful video would be a 2.5 hour loop of morgue pictures of gunfight losers accompanied by the following voice-over:
Seek credible, relevant professional training, and practice.
Seek credible, relevant professional training, and practice!
Seek credible, RELEVANT professional training, and PRACTICE!
Seek credible, RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL training, and PRACTICE!
SEEK CREDIBLE, RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL TRAINING, AND PRACTICE!!!

After about five viewings the subtle hint may actually strike home.

Did he run you through alot of his stuff when he was training you guys?

Excellent sound advise.

The scenario where the training DVD’s are useful, is for people (like me) who are physically disabled and can’t take a training class. If I didn’t have so much trouble walking (I need a cane), I would love to take a training class.

I got the Magpul Carbine DVD’s and picked up a few things from them. I will get their Hangun DVD’s too, and see what else I can learn. I shot IDPA for several years before I couldn’t walk without the cane, so I’m looking to pick up some tips to add to my repertoire. If I can get better through surgery, I’ll be able to practice what I’ve learned and maybe take a class after that. (fingers crossed)

But for now, the DVD’s will have to substitute for taking a class. :frowning:

Physical disability is no excuse not to take a class unless it is in the extreme. I was in an EAG Carbine course with two Wounded Warriors; one in a wheelchair and one missing a leg. They made it through fine. It was all about determination.

The issue here is about good dvd’s…you have some good suggestions.

I also like Clint Smith’s stuff. Probably the next one’s will be Kelly McCann.

Hope you’re back on the range soon.

Clint’s stuff is great but too brief. If you ever get a chance to go to Thunder Ranch take it.

You don’t know his situation and not many classes can or will make accommodations for people with disabilities including combat disabled veterans like myself. EAG went out of their way to do so and good for them.

Shivworks Fighting Handgun

Yeah, I’ve seen those people in the threads. I can’t stand unassisted, but I don’t have a wheelchair either. But above those considerations, is that I can’t work and don’t have the money. If I could take a class, especially EAG, I would. I am having surgery next week, if that works and I get a job, that will make it possible. I’m not a quitter, but I know my limitations.

I agree with you. I took FP and I did not ask for my money back at the end but I really thought about it. I felt that the advertistment was a little misleading about learning more here in two day than the 5 day schools. I also thought I would be around shooters and there was a brand new 2nd Lt. who brought his wife along who had not fired a weapon till that day. On the 3 and one half inch dot drill I thought she was going to shoot her 1000rd class requirement for the class at the number 1 dot. Her could not hit crap.

I had to look at the level where I am so I did’nt bother to ask for my money back.

[QUOTE=Jim D;604940]I just tried to watch the Thunder Ranch DVD’s again and had to turn them off.

Something about watching Clint Smith shoot from weaver, reload at arms length (racking the slide instead of using the slide stop/ release), and promoting a ready position at full extension that just makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

Yeah Clint is old school if you ever go to Chuck Taylors, school he shoots weaver and last I was there will not let you shoot anything else which is not good.

As far as using the slide the slide level id faster however, if you are not familiar and pick up a Sig you will be behind the eight getting that pistol back up to stuff if you are use to the slide level.

Do they REALLY not let you shoot in another position?? WOW. Talk about old school and not open minded.

As for using the slide, you can take then to water but can’t make them drink. Old touchy subject.
I was sent this a little while ago. Again it’s about consistency, consistency, consistency.

Good little video for the new guy.

The magpul DVD’s are pretty good, but as stated not a replacement for formal training and practice.
