Best stock and sling for a Mossberg 500?

I just got a Mossberg 500 and it came with a pistol grip stock, which is too long for me. I’m looking for a shorter (adjustable is better) stock in the regular grip configuration with a GREAT buttpad for shock absorption. Also, I’m looking for a simple, reliable sling for the platform. I’m new to shotguns, though have been running ARs for a while so I’m familiar with BFG Vickers slings and Magpul/BCM furniture. What are you guy’s recommendation as far as shotgun furniture go?

Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the Mesa Tactical and Magpul MS4

The two most dangerous places in today’s world:
1.) a gun free zone
2.) your comfort zone

This is for a 870, but they make them for the Mossberg as well.

Thanks Skipper, how’s that CTR as far as shock absorption goes?

JMEO but Mossbergs are NO GO for serious use with pistol grip tactical stocks - think about what you have to do to disengage or engage the safety when using the tacticool stock. Get a conventional body armor/youth stock and if you need (you don’t really) get a kickeez recoil pad - https://kickeezproducts.com/

If you pull the stock into your shoulder and push forward instead of pulling back with your support hand you’ll accomplish a couple things - 1) you won’t momentarily lock the action by pulling back against the action bar lock (not as much a problem with Mossies as Remington 870’s); 2) you will insure the breech face is square against the base of the shell ensuring centered primer hits - a real problem with the 500 series in my experience because you really want them to go bang everytime; 3) what I’ve described - pull - push is somewhat of an isometric position - much of the recoil will die between your hands.

In terms of slings, I would use this front sling adaptor on a Mossy 500 - http://www.gggaz.com/mossberg-500-sling-and-flashlight-combo-mount.html and use an attachment point on the side of the stock a couple inches forward of the recoil pad. This is what I use on mine: http://www.noveske.com/products/flush-qd-sling-mount

Have a look at the Magpul stock designed for the Mossberg 500 series.
It has a adjustable LOP with a spacer system. I like mine.
You really don’t want pistol grip on the Mossberg since it has a tang mounted safety.

If you just want to attach a sling, most of the 500 series already have a stud installed on magazine tube cap.

I’ll echo you do not want a pistol grip stock on a Mossberg. Check put the Magpul:

Hogue 12" LOP is another option:

I use a VCAS on my 12ga with a M16 buttstock adapter:

If you do not have a front attachment point you can use a 6.25" UWL:

Yeah, that’s what I figured, hence I’m looking for a non-pistol grip stock. Does the kickeez recoil pad work with the Magpul stock?

I like Remington Supercell pads(typically get good reviews) which can be used on the SGA stock with the adapter.

t I have a BFG sling on every long I own. Best 2 point you can get in my opinion and 2 point is also the only way to go in my opinion. there are plenty of other good ones though. All i can say about the stock is I like a non-pistol grip stock for shotguns and I like the hogue 12" LOP stock.

good luck

I have the same BFG sling for all my carbines and is thinking about re-using it for the shotgun. How are you attaching it to your SG with the Hogue stock? And what about the attachment point at the fore-end, do you use the factory swivel or an aftermarket QD?

The MagPul pad is fine and I have had many Kickeez pads on target guns. The other thing the two share is they are sticky. I wrap a couple of layers of electrical around the pad to make them less likely to catch on your shirt or jacket when mounting. While nowhere near a pistol grip the MagPul stock grip is more vertical than a traditional stock. The best feature is the near parallel comb. Traditional dropped combs are harder on your cheek than parallel.

on the back I want to make my own holes and bolt this
https://www.magpul.com/products/m-lok-paraclip-sling-mount

or this directly to the side of the stock. I will simply drill the appropriate sized holes on the left side of the stock only. remove the butt pad for access. bolt it on from the outside with small washers and nuts on the inside. it will work perfectly.

but currently on the back I just tied a seesaw knot with paracord (ends up being a 4 cord knot so its very strong) around the rear 1/3 of the stock ( think like a paracord bracelet around your wrist) and used the factory sling swivel stud as a tie off point to keep it from sliding. it actually works very well and doesn’t move at all. you just have to synch it down tight around the stock while tying it to the sling stud on the bottom. i know i know… its not acceptable in the “Tactical world” to use paracord as a sling mount but a 4 cord seesaw knot will hold you hanging from your shotgun with your buddy hanging from you ankles, cliff hanger style (see the movie).

EDIT:

Magpul furniture set and Frank Proctors way of the Gun sling. KISS

no real reason to drill on the side of the magpul stock, it already has a hole for a QD sling stud.

very good point…but i don’t like the magpul stock (Looks mostly). I like to hogue. holes will be drilled. to each his own. I wish I did like the magpul stock it would have made it easier.

I’m sorry if I didn’t answer this. I just saw it. The CTR has no adverse effects on the recoil. I used a BCM receiver extension with the CTR and it’s nice to be able to adjust the length for uniform use with concealable body armor and adjust it for use without.
